Director's Message

Dear SENTRY Community,

Together with our researchers, students, and partners, we have experienced a lot of “firsts” in the last few months.

We are excited to roll out a SENTRY newsletter and launch our new website. We saw the emergence of case studies in the areas of school safety and secure passenger-based surface transportation and hosted many events to engage with and learn from our stakeholders. Both efforts make progress toward our goal of creating a Virtual Sentry Framework.

Introducing our New Website

SENTRY is thrilled to announce the launch of our new website to advance our mission to conduct stakeholder-informed research to better secure soft targets and crowded spaces and to educate the homeland security workforce in this space. As we continue our transformative research, we plan to use our new digital forum to connect community members and inform the public about our work.

Future of School Security Workshop

On July 19 and 22, 2022, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and SENTRY held a two-part, Future of School Security Working Group Meeting to envision how a Virtual Sentry Framework supports a safe, learning-conducive environment in schools five to ten years in the future. The workshop gathered first responders, government representatives, industry technologists, and school personnel, all experts in the needs of school security.

Participants built out viable components of potential solutions by working collaboratively in fast-paced, high-energy sessions. Strengths and weaknesses of our developing Virtual Sentry Framework emerged, along with robust next steps in continued partnership with PNNL to identify the future of school security.
