SEPTEMBER 2024

Back to School - Back to Regular Programming!

It was a great summer of Summer Reading adventures! I visited some libraries for the first time, and visited some again - and am catching up on writing about my adventures across New Mexico. You can read about my visits to Erna Fergusson, Jemez Springs, Angel Fire, Questa, and Santa Fe on the NMSL Hitchhiker Blog on the website. I also wrote about Smokey

Bear celebrations across the state. I have a few more articles to write - so keep an eye on the website!

We had a great CSLP Annual Meeting last week in Denver. At the Annual Meeting we vote on upcoming themes and slogans, brainstorm ideas to improve services and increase member involvement, share out best practices, and build relationships across the country. I was proud to share out about what's happening in New Mexico and also be elected to the CSLP Board! Watch for my New Mexico trucker hat to make an appearance at an upcoming YS meeting!

New Wellness/Patron Safety Trainings

Wed, October 9, 2024 @11:00AM MT

We often think of Domestic Violence as an Adult problem, but Teens also face the dangers of dating and relationship violence.  This TEEN-tober, we invite you to attend an essential training session by the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence that will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to better support your patrons. As library staff, you play a crucial role in creating a safe and supportive environment for your community.

During this session, we will cover the following topics:

  • Domestic violence statistics: Gain insight into the prevalence and impact of domestic violence on teens and adults.
  • Understanding the issue: Learn about the broad scope of domestic violence and its effects.
  • Recognizing warning signs: Identify the subtle and overt signs that someone may be experiencing domestic violence.
  • Bystander intervention: Learn strategies for safely and effectively intervening when you suspect someone is in danger.
  • Being a trusted helper: Understand how to be seen as a safe and supportive resource for those in need. As well as how to refer survivors to local domestic violence agencies while maintaining confidentiality.

This training is not just about awareness—it’s about empowering you to be a critical resource in the fight against domestic violence. Your role in the library can make a significant difference in someone’s life. We hope you’ll join us for this important session.

These low-tech creations are part of a national project, Engaging Beyond Our Walls, which aims to connect libraries with their communities in innovative ways.
