SER Metro-Detroit is Proud to Announce Our New Partnership with Detroit Public Schools
In partnership with Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), SER YouthBuild Learning Academy (SYLA) East & Southwest provide learners with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and self-discipline necessary to become successful citizens in a global society.

SYLA is an alternative high school for youth ages 16-21 years old tailored to the academic needs of each student and open to residents of any city. Its model combines classroom instruction by a certified teacher and enables students to learn a trade while in school. Students complete assignments using credit recovery software from 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM Monday-Friday. Detroit Public School Diplomas are granted once a student completes their 19 required credits and Graduates participate in DPSCD’s formal Graduation Ceremony in June.

Youth Participant Highlights
Congratulations to our graduating Class of 2021!
SER Metro-Detroit Youth Services had an amazing opportunity with AmeriCorps for 6 lucky young adults this summer to spend 8 weeks learning about careers outdoors or with our national parks. Participants also received a stipend, leadership skills, and had all expenses paid.
VICTOR HARVEY

Victor was born and raised in Detroit, MI, and grew up very shy and quiet, until about a year ago when he truly opened up. Victor was enrolled in our YouthBuild and AmeriCorps programs which helped him grow as a person and helped him become more talkative and to speak more clearly and effectively. Victor also gained leadership skills and earned scholarships for volunteering and activity hours.

Victor overcame a few challenges while enrolled at SER Metro-Detroit. For months, he had transportation issues, but Ms. Ranada Reid, SER Metro-Detroit's Lead Career Coach, was able to provide supportive services to Victor so that he could attend on a regular basis. Ms. Vanesa Fowler, his Youth Career Coach, also provided assistance in registering Victor for driver’s education and he now possesses a valid Michigan driver’s license. Providing Victor with the help to get his driver’s license has positively influenced him. Over the course of our program, Victor had to retake several of his GED tests in order to pass. In the end, this program helped him to be a better test taker and has helped him form better study habits.

In the future, Victor hopes to secure employment and may work for a cement company. He would also like to attend college and is interested in computers. During his time in the program, Victor learned that he should never give up because even if you fail, you can use that to grow.
