SAN FRANCISCO BAY FERRY JOINS CLIPPER START PROGRAM
San Francisco Bay Ferry has officially joined the regional Clipper START pilot program, offering major discounts for qualifying lower-income Bay Area transit riders. Qualifying ferry passengers using a Clipper START card will receive discounts of 50 percent off the adult cash fare, identical to the existing discounts for senior, youth and disabled riders. The discount is available on all of San Francisco Bay Ferry’s routes.

Clipper START, a program of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), launched in July 2020 with four large transit operators. San Francisco Bay Ferry is one of six Bay Area transit operators to join the program in November, with additional agencies expected to join in the coming months.

Bay Area residents whose household income is no more than 200 percent of the federal poverty line are eligible for Clipper START. Once activated, Clipper START cards work just like other Clipper cards: cardholders load value to their account online or at a retail location and tag their card when boarding and disembarking from the ferry. The discount is applied automatically.

DOLLAR DAYS PROMOTION SUSPENDED
Due to the escalation of COVID-19 outbreaks in the Bay Area and resulting new state and county restrictions, San Francisco Bay Ferry’s Dollar Days on the Bay promotion was suspended effective December 1. Normal fares are now being collected. If you already purchased promotional tickets on Hopthru that you planned to use in December, you'll receive an automatic refund. There's no need for you to do anything.

WETA BOARD TO RECEIVE HOVERCRAFT FEASIBILITY STUDY
A final hovercraft feasibility study report will be presented at the next meeting of the WETA Board of Directors at 1:30 p.m. on December 10. In 2019, WETA commissioned a study to determine the feasibility of hovercraft for public transit in the San Francisco Bay. The team conducting the study will provide the WETA Board with an update on their findings.

DON'T GET CAUGHT OFF GUARD BY AN EARTHQUAKE
Most Californians say they are very or somewhat knowledgeable about the steps they can take to prepare for a natural disaster such as an earthquake, yet 60 percent remain highly concerned about the potential impact of a disaster on their household. To ensure all Californians are prepared, the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) recently launched the “Don’t Get Caught Off Guard” campaign to promote awareness of critical earthquake warning resources available at no-cost through Earthquake Warning California.

Earthquake Warning California’s “Don’t Get Caught Off Guard” campaign is a statewide education effort to help the public learn about earthquake warning tools and resources. Cal OES, in collaboration with the California Integrated Seismic Network Partners from United States Geological Survey (USGS), University of California – Berkeley (UCB), California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and California Geological Survey (CGS) launched the nation’s first State Earthquake Early Warning System in October of 2019. The system uses ground motion sensors and sensors in smartphones to detect an earthquake before humans can feel it and issues a ShakeAlert® Message in real time so they can take cover before shaking happens. An earthquake warning can provide additional life-saving seconds for people to Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
