First, thank you to everyone who spoke up for San Francisco’s trees. Hundreds of letters were sent to City Hall urging the Board of Supervisors and Mayor Lurie to protect our tree canopy and preserve the public’s right to appeal tree-removal decisions.
The response was extraordinary. Unfortunately, the outcome was a reminder of how difficult it has become for public participation to meaningfully influence decisions at City Hall.
Yesterday, the Board of Supervisors voted 7–4 to pass the Tree Ordinance, despite the significant community response.
We are deeply grateful to the four Supervisors who voted NO: Connie Chan (District 1), Danny Sauter (District 3), Jackie Fielder (District 9), and Shamann Walton (District 10).
The vote may be over. The work to protect San Francisco’s trees, and the public’s voice in decisions that affect our neighborhoods, is not.
On Thursday, September 24 at 7:00 PM, urban-forestry advocate Josh Klipp will host a webinar examining the state of San Francisco’s tree canopy, what the Tree Ordinance could mean for our streets and neighborhoods, and where advocates go from here.
