Holiday Blues?

The holidays are here! During this time of year, it's crucial to acknowledge that while the holidays are joyous and filled with connection for some, they may evoke different feelings for the youth we support. Some may have never experienced the delight of receiving a gift or are facing their first holiday away from their family, traditions, and places that are special to them. Others might carry poignant memories of past traumas linked to this time. It's essential to connect with the young individuals we support, inquire about their perspectives on the holidays, and respect their choices. Whether they opt to celebrate or not. If they're open to it, exploring the creation of new traditions can be meaningful. Above all, let's stand by them, offering unwavering support and empathy as they navigate this season, irrespective of whether it's joyful or challenging.

CASA Ambassadors Needed

With over 80 youth on our waitlist, SFCASA recognizes that word of mouth is the best way to recruit more volunteers. Are you passionate about the CASA program and willing to talk with prospective CASAs? As a CASA Ambassador you will share your experiences as an Advocate and answer questions they may have. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out to Eduardo Mayorga ([email protected]).

ACTIVITIES & RESOURCES FOR YOUTH

Free Tickets to SF Academy of Sciences

Calling all science lovers! SFCASA have been gifted California of Academy of Sciences tickets. If you and your youth are interested in going to the California Academy of Sciences please email [email protected].

Uber Vouchers

We are pleased to share that SFCASA has received a donation from Uber

to support transportation for Non-Minor Dependents (NMD)

as well as for Advocates!

In general, using an Uber voucher for an NMD will be a supplemental resource appropriate for emergency, one-time, and short term transportation needs (not for regular transportation to and from school, work, or other daily/weekly appointments).

If you would like to request an Uber voucher for yourself when you are not otherwise able to get to your visit with your assigned youth, please be in touch with your Case Supervisor.

Educational Advocacy

Educational Advocacy Reminders

The school year is almost halfway through! Please have conversations with the young person you are assigned to, asking questions like: How is school going? What are your favorite subjects? What are your least favorite? If they are in high school, please ask for their transcripts from their guidance counselor. You can encourage them to ask for their transcripts to involve them in the educational advocacy process. It is essential to check in with the juniors and seniors to ensure that they will graduate on time. It is never too early to start the conversation about graduation and beyond. If the student is not on track to graduate, please reach out to the guidance counselor. If the student is enrolled in Special Education, please reach out to the Educational Specialist (SpEd Teacher/Case Manager).

Please make sure that you upload the most current education documents (IEPs, transcripts, 504 plans) in Advocate Link. This strengthens educational advocacy for the youth we serve. There is a high probability that a youth will change placements, so it is crucial those documents are in their file so they can be provided to the new school to support immediate enrollment. Having these documents readily available ensures that the student’s academic needs are supported.

FAFSA Reminder

It’s almost time to apply for FAFSA! The new form will launch by December 31, 2023. FAFSA has some major changes and improvements for the 2024-25 Application. Support the young person you serve with create an account with StudentAid.gov.

On December 6th at 10am, JBAY is offering the webinar on a "How to" to complete FAFSA/CADAA forms. This is not only beneficial to the youth, but to you as well. This webinar also counts toward your CE Credits! You can sign up for this webinar here.

Court Reports in Advocate Link

All Advocates are encouraged to write your court report directly in Advocate Link!

This will greatly simplify and streamline the court report writing and editing process, as most of the fields will auto populate, and the formatting will be all preset. Plus you can use the youth’s full name because the writing is in our database, and not sent in an email

  • No more fussing with the formatting
  • No more using initials for the youth’s name
  • No more emails back and forth with your Case Supervisor or multiple versions of the report

Instructions for writing your next court report in A.L. can be found HERE

Please reach out to our Data Specialist, Janey Kemp at [email protected] for support or with any questions. Thank you!

CASA COMMUNITY NETWORK HUDDLE

Wednesday December 6th, 2023 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM on Zoom (1 CE credit)

Topic: Learning From Each Other … Sharing With Each Other

This will be an opportunity for CASAs to celebrate our successes, as well as share any challenges we're facing with our youth, for example: anger management strategies, emotional dysregulation around the holidays, improving communication, etc. It will be a great chance to learn from each other about ways to support the young person we serve.

The CASA Community Network (CCN) is a network for CASAs, organized by CASAs and hosted by CASAs. We share, lean in and on, and support each other through events, such as The Huddle. Sometimes we learn from expert guest speakers in continuing education sessions. In The Huddle, we learn from experts – ourselves – we have collective years of expertise among us. We are a network of support – who better understands the ups, the downs, the joys, the challenges than we do.
