ADVOCATE SPOTLIGHT

Gary Solak

Gary Solak has served as a CASA for 3+ years on multiple cases. He leaned into patience and flexibility while experiencing several cases that closed soon after he was appointed. In the past year he has been serving a young man whose case and placement has seen quite a few changes including reunification with his family. Gary has respectfully and effectively communicated with the youth's mom about her son's well-being and to plan visits. They go on bi-weekly outings to museums, horse riding lessons, and hikes. We are deeply grateful for Gary's engagement with the youth he serves and his family, as well as his regular attention to logs and Court Reports, and sharing funny stories with his Case Supervisor. Thank you Gary!

Transitional Age Youth (TAY)

SFCASA's Peer to Peer Grant Program

SFCASA’s Peer to Peer Grant is now OPEN and will remain open until February 15th. Young people can apply for a grant between $500-$1500 to address needs such as education, transportation, housing, and more! Those who identify as Black or Black/multi-ethnic are encouraged to apply.

Some general reminders:

1. Young people must apply on their own (advocates, PSWs, etc. are welcome to support but can NOT apply on the young person’s behalf)

2. Two paragraphs at minimum are required in the short response section or it will be denied.

3. All submitted applications must have an invoice or cost estimate from a business to support the amount being requested as youth will not be receiving the grant money directly. SFCASA will only be paying vendors directly. This means that we will not accept grant applications for smaller requests such as toiletries or ongoing needs as the funding is a ONE time support.

4. If a youth applied last year and was awarded, the youth is not eligible to apply this cycle until May 2024.

You can access the application here or via the attached flier.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to TAY Specialist and Case Supervisor, Theodora Liebhart at [email protected] or 628.867.7373. SFCASA YOUth Empowerment Board Members are also available for questions via email at [email protected].

Youth Voice at SFCASA

The SFCASA Youth Advisory Board reviewed 11 applications for the month of January! Out of those 11 applicants, the Youth Board awarded 6 young people. They were able to support in getting youth laptops for school, paying off a portion of a youth’s student loans, and helped a young person pay for glasses.

Some of the Youth Board’s favorite awards that they granted are; supporting a youth who is starting a lash business, putting funds on a youth’s commissary so that they can access healthier food options, getting a youth a new bed that they can properly sleep in, funding a laptop for a young person who is a native Spanish speaker and put forth tremendous effort in filling out their grant application in English, and lastly providing a single parenting youth with first month’s rent and security deposit in order to create a more stable living situation for them and their child. The Youth Board looks forward to reviewing more grants in February and being able to support more current and formerly systems involved youth.

Universal Basic Income:

Foundations for the Future Pilot Program

All youth navigating foster care in the dependency side or in the Juvenile Probation side who are exiting care on their 21st birthday between January 1st, 2022 and April 30th, 2023 are eligible for Universal Basic Income!

This is a pilot program called Foundations for the Future where youth receive $1200 a month for 18 months to support them as they transition out of the foster care system. Through this pilot program the San Francisco Human Services Agency will provide this support to 150 youth. It is up to the youth to use these funds how they see fit, but as part of the program, a financial literacy aspect will be provided by Bay Area Legal Aid and First Place for Youth. Not all youth exiting care are eligible and there is a criteria being followed so please make sure to reference that when looking into whether or not the youth you are supporting is able to access this resource. The youth will have to apply to access this resource, an application link will be sent directly to the young person from the San Francisco Human Services Agency once their case is dismissed. During this process the youth will be able to identify if they would like the funds to be directly deposited or have the option of a reloadable debit card.

The criteria is: .

  • At least 21 years old and aged out of San Francisco extended foster care through Family & Children's Services or Juvenile Probation on or after January 1, 2022.
  • Have an annual household income of $60,000 or less for a single adult (no children) or $171,000 or less for households with two adults and two children (infants) in San Francisco County.

For any question regarding eligibility or how to support your youth with this process please feel free to reach out to you Case Supervisor.

EXPECTANT and PARENTING YOUTH & CASA ADVOCACY (CALIFORNIA CASA)

Wednesday, February 7, 2024, 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm on Zoom (2 CE Credits)

This training will focus on how CASAs can support expectant and parenting youth (EPY) in the child welfare system in California so that the youth are thriving as a parent not just surviving. The ultimate goal of CASA advocacy is for the children of parenting youth/NMDs not to enter the child welfare system. We will review the rights and choices of expectant and parenting youth/NMDs in California’s child welfare systems, share resources/benefits available to expectant and parenting youth and suggest opportunities to create systems of support/resources in your own counties. We will also share some examples of systems of support/resources in Los Angeles County as well as discuss the challenges of implicit bias, racism and trauma on our EPYs and CASA advocacy.

The speakers will outline some guiding principles for CASAs working with expectant and parenting youth. Attendees will learn how to:

  • Identify and strengthen protective factors to ensure the child of the parenting CASA youth does not enter the child welfare system
  • Build up the capacities and skills of the CASA youth to parent and advocate for their child.
  • Amplify the EPY’s voice to make their own choices in their life and the life of their child
