ADVOCACY SPOTLIGHT

Jennifer C. Smith

Jennifer is the epitome of an advocate. With a little over a year of CASA experience under her belt, Jennifer has displayed care, initiative, mindfulness, and devotion to her the youth she serves, SP.

Despite living quite a distance away from the youth, Jennifer visits SP bi-weekly. Together, they go on outings to the mall, eat yummy food, and talk about life. Jennifer is always eager to feed SP’s curiosity and help her find solutions to her issues. Without being coercive, Jennifer finds way to inspire SP. When SP was honing her literacy skills, Jennifer tried finding books that might peak an interest in SP. When SP expressed interest in photography, Jennifer went out and bought her an instant camera and helped her develop the photos.

Beyond the materialistic things and the timely logs, Jennifer is there for SP. Jennifer is always quick to act when life throws lemons and ensures that SP knows she will always be supported.

Jennifer, thank you for being an amazing advocate and for supporting SP!

Impactful Conversations about Dreams and Goals with Educational Consultant Lorna Gilbert

Having impactful conversations with FY as they enter young adulthood can feel daunting. Opportunities to teach “adulting skills” abound in every chat, activity, and excursion. We will discuss how to create learning experiences with youth to teach career exploration, self-advocacy, and goal-setting strategies through everyday real-life interactions.

We’ll also explore a few online educational resources anyone can access to support teaching life skills (e.g., free interest surveys, career exploration, goal setting, budgeting, etc.). Ultimately, we aim to empower each young adult to dream, build self-confidence, explore career options, and cultivate a growth mindset.

CASA Tip of the Month

Did you know that you can check in with your youth's teacher, school, get academic records, and attend IEP's even if you're not an ERH?

With the beginning of the school year, we encourage you to check in with your youth's teacher. Ask how they are doing, and if there are any ways you can support them during this school new year.

Connect with your Case Supervisor to find out more.
