Happy August!

Summer is here! It's been hot and steamy, followed by rain and thunderstorms. It hasn't been one of our favorite summers but we're making the best of it.

It's in our best interest to plan some fun activities. Whether you relax poolside, at the beach, on the deck with a cool beverage, picnic with your family or sit back and listen to the rain, you should take time to rest. Whether you play sports like pickleball, take walks, or go on the rides at Great Adventure, you should make the time to move your body. Finding the balance in life is key. Eating nutritious food and having a good attitude is also important for a better you. But none of this matters if you have vertebral subluxations!

Vertebral subluxations are spinal misalignments that negatively affect the way your brain and body communicate. Can you feel when you're subluxated? Nope! Only 10% of your nerves can feel pain. So why base your care on 10%? It really is in your best interest to have your spine checked on a regular basis whether you are in pain or not. Given the choice, do you want to function at your best or do you want to just coast to a complete stop?

Life can be challenging sometimes. You can be physically challenged such as lifting something awkwardly. You can be emotionally challenged such as dealing with people who don't do their jobs. You can be chemically challenged like when you're fed less than nutritious food. Whatever life throws at you, you will deal with it better if your body is working at its best.

I've been getting adjusted since I was seventeen. Not for headaches, not for low back pain, not for sciatica, but for a body that serves and protects me. I get checked and adjusted at least once weekly and never plan on stopping. If it's good for me and my family then, of course, it's good for yours. Your body is your vehicle but in this case, you only have one. You can't change it out for a newer model. Take the best care of it and it will serve you well.

Continue with your weekly visits and, if it's been a while, come on back, We would love to see you and get you back on track,

See you on your next visit.

Termites in the house

A couple of termites passing through your house may not do too much damage.

If they were to move in, multiply, and start eating, they would destroy the framework of your house. Then one day as you unsuspectingly walk across the kitchen floor your house collapses.

Vertebral subluxations are like termites in may ways. Most of the time you don't know they are there unless you have someone that knows how to check for them. The longer you have them the more damage they will do. The time to correct them is as soon as they occur. The sooner you get rid of vertebral subluxations the quicker and better you can express more of your life potential.

This is why it is so important to make sure that you and your loved ones get your spine checked on a regular basis.

Thank you to Stamatis Tsamoutalidis, DC for this article

Did you know...

-Your brain makes 2 million cells a second.

-Your nose (brain) can remember over 50,000 different scents.

-One drop of blood contains 5 million Red Blood Cells, 7,000 White Blood Cells, and thousands of platelets.

-Energy output of the heart in a 24 hour period is enough to raise 3 fully loaded  greyhound buses up into the air.

-The nervous system transmits messages at 275 miles per hour.

-Your lungs are currently exchanging oxygen through tiny air sacs into the blood

to be delivered to every cell in your body for survival.

-Your digestive system is turning your last meal into energy and new tissue.

-Your immune cells are constantly on alert and ready to protect you from any foreign invaders.

THAT'S A FACT!

Excerpted from an article by Dan Sullivan, DC

A glass of water on a forest fire

From time to time, we get the question, "How often do I need to have my spine checked?” They wanted to show up once a month for a quick "crack"  or only when something hurts. The response: "It's like trying to put out a forest fire with a glass of water... your intention is right, but the volume is lacking."

Some say one adjustment in a lifetime is better than none. But if you really want to reap all the benefits that chiropractic care offers, consistency is the key.

People want to do the minimum work needed to get the maximum results. It's human nature. Quick fix solutions, drive through windows and get rich quick schemes all appeal to that part of our brain that wants results right now. And temporarily covering up symptoms or doing away with offending body parts is not an effective solution.

Research by Tapio Videman, MD has shown that when subluxations are left uncorrected for as little as two weeks, and then corrected (spinal adjustment), there remains some permanent degeneration in the joint. It never goes back to 100%.The reason we check your spine weekly is largely due to this research. If we checked your spine on a once a month basis and you did something that created a vertebral subluxation between visits, the damage to your spinal joints would be have some permanence before you got back to the office. Same thing with every three weeks and every two weeks. Outside of checking your spine every moment of every day, once a week spinal checks assure that you will spend the most time free of subluxation and functioning at peak performance.

See you on your next visit.

Back to School backpack safety

Several news stories and articles have appeared speaking to the issue of backpack safety in school children. One article starts off by noting that backpacks can be purchased anywhere, but very few people ask about the construction of these packs. The article suggests that parents ask the following questions. "How wide are the shoulder straps? Does it disperse weight evenly? Does the bag have a waist belt to disperse weight to the hips?"

The article reports that according to the the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), there are more than 21,000 backpack-related injuries each year. The article notes that increased weight is a major issue. The result, as they suggest, is that, "This increase in weight can be correlated to an increase in children seeing chiropractors."

On July 12, 2007, the California publication, The Acorn, also published a story on backpack safety. In this story they quote Dr. Gerard W. Clum of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress who advises, "Backpacks weighing more than 15 pounds that are slung over a shoulder produce an imbalance in the rib cage." He continued by saying, "This type of repetitive strain can also initiate arm and hand numbness, headaches or backaches."

The July 20, 2007 Toledo Free Press also ran a story on backpacks where they offered tips by the American Chiropractic Association to "help prevent the needless pain that backpack misuse could cause the students in your household."

These tips included:

  • Make sure your child's backpack weighs no more than 10 percent of his or her body weight.
  • The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline.
  • A backpack with individualized compartments helps in positioning the contents most effectively.
  • Make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child's back.
  • Urge your child to wear both shoulder straps.
  • The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack fits to your child's body.
  • If the backpack is still too heavy, talk to your child's teacher.

And, most importantly, get your family's spines checked weekly.
