Happy March!

February was a little extra, for sure! With its frigid temperatures and impressive snow storms, we were reminded that we live in the Northeast. But, we made it! We survived the cold temps, the loss of power, the slips and falls on the ice and sore muscles from shoveling snow.

Now it's March! Spring is right around the corner. Soon, we will be planning our garden, listening to more birds chirping, watching the flowers bloom, and spending more time outside.

March is also a verb. I would encourage you to get outside and "march" around the neighborhood. Enjoy the beauty that surrounds you.

"March" to the grocery store and commit to making more nutritious meals at home.

"March" into the office and have your spine checked for vertebral subluxations. Getting adjusted removes the interference to your body functioning at its best - All the time. Chiropractic is a habit that pays dividends for you and your family.

For those that managed to keep on schedule with your visits during February, we applaud you. For those who haven't been in in a while, we welcome you back. Now's a great time to take care of yourself, because you cannot pour from an empty cup. You matter!

See you on your next visit.

What is the chiropractic objective? How often should you and your family be seen?

When you and your family first started care in our office, you were most likely seen frequently so that we may:

  • assist your body in removing the interference to your nervous system, (the body's master controller),
  • improve it's function and
  • replace a bad habit (nerve interference) with a good one (maximizing your body's ability to function).

And all of this happens regardless of the presence or absence of aches, pains, diseases or infirmities. You see, how you feel may be the least accurate barometer of how well your body is or isn't functioning. A minor pain may be the result of a life-threatening pathology or it may cause no pain at all. A significant pain may be the result of a minor issue. Additionally, you may have an incredible pain threshold.

Chiropractic is not about diagnosis, treatment, cure or even prevention. It is about one thing - FUNCTION. Chiropractic care has one objective - to maximize your body's ability to function under any/all circumstances.

Every day, you and I face physical, chemical and emotional stresses. The quality of our lives depends upon how well we adapt, overcome or rise above them.

So how can my family and I reap all of the benefits of chiropractic care?

One word. Consistency.

Some sat that one adjustment in a lifetime is better than none, but if you really want to reap all the benefits of chiropractic care, it simply must be consistent.

So what does that mean?

It means that, in this office, you and your family should have your spines checked no less than once weekly - more if indicated. And that recommendation is based upon science.

Tapio Videman, M.D. published a study in in Clinical Biomechanics in1987, proving that when immobilization occurs in a joint (a component of subluxation can lead to nervous system interference) and remains there for more than 10-15 days, that joint begins to degenerate and never returns to it's pre-immobilization status - the damage becomes permanent.

The entire study can be read HERE.

"The correction (improvement) of VS (vertebral subluxation) requires consistency and frequency. VS takes years to "accumulate" and requires years of regular care for correction. When the vertebrae is subluxated it must be un-subluxated until the paraspinal muscles, ligaments and tendons are re-educated to hold it in place.” - Joe Donofrio, DC

“My job is to concentrate on the correction of subluxation whether people are sick or not. If they have subluxation, potential is reduced and interfered with. As long as there is nerve interference the body can't live up to its potential. Every function of human life, mental, physical, spiritual, and intellectual, every function of the human body - is impaired by subluxation." - Reggie Gold, DC

Has everyone in your family had their spines checked this week?

The power of decisions

The following is a great quote from Anthony Robbins:

"It's not what we do once in a while that counts, but our consistent actions. And what is the father of all action? What ultimately determines who we become and where we go in life? The answer is our decisions. It's in these moments that our destiny is shaped. More than anything else, I believe our decisions -- not the conditions of our lives -- determine our destiny."

Everything we do counts. We make hundreds of decisions a day. Some are tiny and unconscious and some are large and life changing. But in my opinion, most are small decisions that do not seem life changing. We decide to brush our teeth, eat a good breakfast, or to exercise. All day long we make these types of decisions. THEY ALL COUNT! That's good news because we can take control of our lives from moment to moment.

You control more of your life than you have been led to believe. Get informed about important things, decide on a plan for different aspects of your life, and take action. Take the tortoise approach to life. Most cannot make major changes in a week or a month. People over estimate what they can do in a month and underestimate what they can do in a decade.

Make decisions to consistently improve the way your body functions one week - one adjustment at a time. Make a decision to get your spine checked regularly instead of waiting for a crisis. Your body will thank you for it. So will those that depend on you.

The power of kindness

The year was 1863, on a spring day in Northern Pennsylvania. A poor boy was selling goods door-to-door to pay his way through school. He realized he had only a dime left, and that he was hungry. So he decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry and so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"

"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strengthened also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Years later, that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, he went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown, he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to the case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested from the business office to pass the final billing to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally, she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill.

She read these words:

"PAID IN FULL WITH ONE GLASS OF MILK..."

Dr. Howard Kelly*

Dr. Howard Kelly was a distinguished physician who, in 1895, founded the Johns Hopkins Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Johns Hopkins University. According to Dr. Kelly's biographer, Audrey Davis, the doctor was on a walking trip through Northern Pennsylvania one spring day when he stopped by a farm house for a drink of water.

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."
