Happy October!

Well, here we are. October! They say time flies by quicker as you get older. Well, I guess I am old because this year is flying by.

The question that keeps coming to mind is "What are you waiting for?" We have had a list of things we wanted to do, including refreshing the office. We waited for the time to be right and we soon realized the time would never be perfect. We had to pull the trigger and trust it would work out for everyone....and it did.

My question to those of you that have not been in the office recently is "What are you waiting for?" Are you waiting for your work schedule to change? Are you waiting for the sporting schedule to quiet down? Are you waiting for an ache or a pain? That's not really in your best interest and is not consistent with keeping your spine checked and free of interference regardless of an ache or a pain. For those who stop by on a regular basis, good job! We are so proud of you for taking the time to take care of yourself. Some of you have stated chiropractic is a "game changer" and it is. Some incorporate their visit with "self care Saturday". Some enter a reminder in their cell phone. Whatever it is, we welcome you and are here to serve you.

Our schedule allows for availability five days a week, morning, afternoon and evening. No appointments necessary. Just stop by. If you're running a little late, call me.

Life is not perfect. Having your spine checked allows for you to be closer to your perfect self. You are worth it.

See you on your next visit.

Chiropractic Certainty

Most people, including many medical doctors, have never been educated on why chiropractic helps improve the health and function of the body beyond neck and back pain relief.

Science explains the intimate relationship that exists between the spine and central nervous system. Any alteration in the way the spinal vertebrae are aligned or moving will create a stress response in the central nervous system.

When this occurs, stress hormones are increased throughout the blood and body. Stress hormones are necessary for survival in a fight or flight situation, but do not provide a good internal environment for growth and development when they are elevated long term.

Chiropractic adjustments gently improve the alignment and movement in the spine and allow a reduction in stress hormones. This improves many aspects of health and function and is the reason why every child and adult deserves to understand and experience the benefits of chiropractic.

Run for the fallen

The Run for the Fallen honors the servicemen and women who gave their lives for our country. Runners began Thursday morning, September 25 in Cape May and ended Sunday, September 29 at the Vietnam Memorial in Holmdel. Each mile of the Run was dedicated to a NJ Hero and the Core Run Team stopped at every Hero Marker (every mile) and presented an American Flag and a personal biographical card to the waiting family members, friends and comrades. The intent was to create a 195+ mile long memorial trail through New Jersey - "One mile - one flag - one hero".

Dr. Daria was invited again this year and was honored to check the spines of the core run team, firemen of Silverton Fire Company, organizers of the event and members of Gold Star families at 6:00pm Saturday evening at the American Legion Post 129 on Church Rd, Toms River.

How often should you and your family get your spines checked?

Over the course of our 40+ years of practice, we often see practice members who, while new to our office, have been under chiropractic care with other chiropractors for months, years, or decades!

Just as there are many different techniques and practice styles in this great profession, there are many opinions on how regularly one should have their spine checked. Let us explain the science behind our recommendation of no less than once weekly spinal checks for you and your family.

Dr. Ogi Ressel is an international lecturer, a pediatric and x-ray specialist, researcher and clinician. He recently wrote an article to chiropractors around the world on this very subject. According to Ressel, "Many chiropractors often schedule patients for a once-a-month maintenance adjustment based on the idea that monthly maintenance adjustments will help prevent and alleviate many problems. In reality, monthly adjustments are promoted because most chiropractors feel that this is the visit frequency that most people will "buy into" as a preventative measure."

Dr. Ressel confronts the chiropractic profession with this reality - " In essence, when most chiropractors place patients on a monthly maintenance schedule, they are simply maintaining their problems, but their symptoms are gone! That is the reality."

Here is Dr. Ressel's reasoning:

1. First of all, research done by Tapio Vidman, M.D., D.M.Sci., (a Researcher in the University of Alberta's Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine), tells us that a subluxation, once formed, will cause an inescapable degeneration progression if it is allowed to remain for more than 10-15 days (published in Clinical Biomechanics 1987). This means that a monthly maintenance visit will absolutely ensure that your patient will get worse over time. Other research on subluxation degeneration, states that microscopic degenerative changes to the hyaline cartilage which surrounds your spinal joints can begin to occur within forty-eight hours of the occurrence of a subluxation!

2. According to Dr. Ressel, "Most doctors do not see their patients on an appropriate schedule of care in order to be able to really correct their subluxation pattern, and it is a pattern. It is a neurological habit the body becomes accustomed to, and it most often starts in children."

"Patients need to be placed on a schedule of care that will actually cause their subluxation pattern to be broken. The correction of subluxation patterning is most important in children."

If you are serious about working with us to see that you and your family function as best you can under any circumstances (regardless of the presence or absence of pain and symptoms), a weekly spinal check is critical.

Regular chiropractic care and WD-40

Most people believe that as you get older, the less flexible you become. Actually, it's the other way around. The stiffer your joints get, the faster you age and develop disease.

In a a classic 1921 study tracing terminal disease and its relationship to spinal degeneration, Henry Windsor, MD concluded, "Disease appears to preceed old age and to cause it. The spine becomes stiff first and old age follows. Therefore we may say, a man is as old as his spine; the arteries become hardened later from constant vasaomotor spasm following sympathetic irritation."

Regular chiropractic care acts like WD-40 for your spine - keeping your joints flexible, your organs youthful and your health potential at its maximum. If you want to win the battle against time, make regular chiropractic care a part of your age defying regime.

Altering structure always affects function

form and function

When you put a suitcase on top of your car, you have altered (temporarily at least) the structure of the car, affecting its weight, its wind resistance, its gas mileage, its braking distance, its tire wear, etc.

A vertebral subluxation is a change in structure of the spine that affects the function of the nerve system. It causes altered spinal biomechanics as well as causing the body to function abnormally (and most of the time does not result in symptoms).

The only thing left is to determine how long you are willing to tolerate this altered function for yourself, your friends, and loved ones.

The goal of regular chiropractic care is to restore normal alignment and function in the spine allowing your nerves and body to function better. This helps you better serve the people that depend on you.

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip.

You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just ponder on them. Just read it straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday.

These are no second-rate achievers.

They are the best in their fields.

But the applause dies.

Awards tarnish ...

Achievements are forgotten.

Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson:

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money ... or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most.

Thank you for your referrals

We would like to thank all of you who have referred friends and family members to our office for care recently. We look forward to serving both them, and you, in the future.

Rest assured we will do all that we can to honor the trust you've place in us.

See you on your next visit.
