Happy OCTOBER!

I recently saw a post on Facebook from Matt Beaudreau that was shared on the group, Mommy Memes. It started with "I would die for my child". He goes on to say, "I believe you. But would you live for them? Would you get yourself healthy? Would you eliminate distractions? Would you lead more intentionally? You'd only have to die once. You have to live every day."

We tend to sacrifice ourselves for our jobs. We tend to put ourselves last when tending to our families. Is that really in our best interests? Are we so distracted by social media that we are not present with our children and others that we hold dear. If you were given a few days to live, what would you focus on?

Living with intention takes effort. Tending to yourself so you can be better for your loved ones is not selfish but rather a necessity for their survival.

Take the time to exercise. Take the time to prepare healthy and nutritious meals. Take the time to sleep. Take the time to pray and focus on the positive. Take the time to see your chiropractor so you can function at your best.

Yes, it all takes effort. You're worth it. Your family is worth it. You would die for them. I invite you to live for them.

See you on your next visit.

Can Chiropractic Care Improve Your Immune System?

While most people think that chiropractic care is for pain relief or restoring mobility, it can also improve your immune system. This ability comes from the fact that your immune system and spine are more closely connected than the average person realizes.

How the Spine and Immune System Are Related

Your nervous system uses your spinal cord to communicate with other areas of your body. As a result, if your spine is misaligned or damaged, your nervous system’s ability to communicate with your body is reduced. This can lead to pain and increase the risk of illness. It can also weaken your immune system.

When you eliminate nerve interference via chiropractic adjustments, the functioning of your spinal nerves improves. This results in improved communications between the nervous system and other parts of your body, including boosting the immune system.

Adding Stress Into the Mix

Stress adds yet another layer of connection between the spine and the immune system. This comes from the fact that your body can hold tension and stress in the spine, which affects the immune system. Research, including a 2004 study, has shown that stress weakens the immune system. It is common to experience stress-related back pain.

This means that increased stress can make your existing back pain worse. At the same time, back pain weakens the immune system due to the nervous system using it for communications.

Research on Chiropractic and the Immune System

Among the various studies on the benefits of chiropractic for the immune system, the most commonly cited is by Dr. Ronald Pero, Ph.D. Dr. Pero is a New York University professor of medicine and the chief of the Preventative Medicine Institute’s Cancer Prevention Research.

This famous study demonstrated the positive effects of chiropractic on the immune system and one’s general health. In the study, Dr. Pero compared the immune system of those who receive chiropractic care and those who do not. In his initial research, patients who had regular chiropractic care for at least five years had immune competence that was 200% better than those who did not get chiropractic care. Compared to people with serious diseases, those who received chiropractic care had 400% higher immune competence.

Life Chiropractic University in 1994

In 1994, Life Chiropractic University and Sid Williams Research Center studied the impact of chiropractic care on HIV positive patients’ immune system. The study involved giving patients adjustments over the course of six months. Patients who received adjustments had 46% more CD4 cells. These cells are essential components of the immune system. By contrast, the control group had a drop of 7.69% in those cells.

The Takeaway

The takeaway is that yes, chiropractic can improve your immune system. There is a growing body of research to back that up. Your immune system is affected by its ability to communicate with your nervous system. As that system uses your spine to communicate, a misaligned spine can lead to immune system issues. By realigning the spine, chiropractic can overcome this and strengthen your immune system.

How often should you and your family get your spines checked?

Over the course of our 39+ years of practice, we often see practice members who, while new to our office, have been under chiropractic care with other chiropractors for months, years, or decades!

Just as there are many different techniques and practice styles in this great profession, there are many opinions on how regularly one should have their spine checked. Let us explain the science behind our recommendation of no less than once weekly spinal checks for you and your family.

Dr. Ogi Ressel is an international lecturer, a pediatric and x-ray specialist, researcher and clinician. He recently wrote an article to chiropractors around the world on this very subject. According to Ressel, "Many chiropractors often schedule patients for a once-a-month maintenance adjustment based on the idea that monthly maintenance adjustments will help prevent and alleviate many problems. In reality, monthly adjustments are promoted because most chiropractors feel that this is the visit frequency that most people will "buy into" as a preventative measure."

Dr. Ressel confronts the chiropractic profession with this reality - " In essence, when most chiropractors place patients on a monthly maintenance schedule, they are simply maintaining their problems, but their symptoms are gone! That is the reality."

Here is Dr. Ressel's reasoning:

1. First of all, research done by Tapio Vidman, M.D., D.M.Sci., (a Researcher in the University of Alberta's Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine), tells us that a subluxation, once formed, will cause an inescapable degeneration progression if it is allowed to remain for more than 10-15 days (published in Clinical Biomechanics 1987). This means that a monthly maintenance visit will absolutely ensure that your patient will get worse over time. Other research on subluxation degeneration, states that microscopic degenerative changes to the hyaline cartilage which surrounds your spinal joints can begin to occur within forty-eight hours of the occurrence of a subluxation!

2. According to Dr. Ressel, "Most doctors do not see their patients on an appropriate schedule of care in order to be able to really correct their subluxation pattern, and it is a pattern. It is a neurological habit the body becomes accustomed to, and it most often starts in children."

"Patients need to be placed on a schedule of care that will actually cause their subluxation pattern to be broken. The correction of subluxation patterning is most important in children."

If you are serious about working with us to see that you and your family function as best you can under any circumstances (regardless of the presence or absence of pain and symptoms), a weekly spinal check is critical.

5 Lessons We Can Learn From

the Blue Zones

The Blue Zones are five regions around the world with higher life expectancy and lower disease rates than average. They include Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Loma Linda, California; Sardinia, Italy; and Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. Here are some reasons why many of those who live in the Blue Zones enjoy greater longevity.

Strong Social Networks

Blue Zoners have very strong social networks. They are highly engaged in their faith-based communities and have a sense of purpose in life. This deep connection to their surroundings helps them remain optimistic and focused on the wellbeing of others, providing them with a sense of satisfaction that influences their lifespan.

Daily Movement

Exercise is an important part of life in the Blue Zones. This doesn’t mean going to the gym every day, but living a lifestyle of low-intensity physical activity, like walking or gardening. By integrating exercise into their everyday lives, people in these regions can stay active and healthy without having to make a conscious effort to do so.

Healthy Diets

Traditional diets are rich in plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts. Meat is eaten sparingly, usually as a small portion. This diet provides Blue Zoners with essential nutrients while avoiding processed and unhealthy foods.

Limited Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol isn’t consumed to excess in the Blue Zones. People typically drink moderate amounts of wine with meals, and there’s usually a social component to the drinking experience. This helps reduce stress levels and makes it easier for people to connect meaningfully.

Community Engagement

Blue Zoners are highly engaged in their communities. They know their neighbors, eat together regularly, and look out for each other’s wellbeing. This sense of connection to their surroundings is an important factor in their longevity and happiness.

Remember, your body will ALWAYS function at a higher level when spinal nerve interference is eliminated thereby allowing your body to function as best it can for as long as it can. ALWAYS.

See you on your next visit!

Run for the fallen

Run for the fallen

The Run for the Fallen honors the servicemen and women who gave their lives for our country. Runners began Thursday morning, September 20 in Cape May and ended Sunday, September 24 at the Vietnam Memorial in Holmdel. Each mile of the Run was dedicated to a NJ Hero and the Core Run Team stopped at every Hero Marker (every mile) and presented an American Flag and a personal biographical card to the waiting family members, friends and comrades. The intent was to create a 190+ mile long memorial trail through New Jersey - "One mile - one flag - one hero".

Dr. Daria was invited again this year and was honored to check the spines of the core run team at 6:00pm Saturday evening at the George P. Vanderveer American Legion Post 129. Runners came from all over the US participated in the event.
