As National Financial Literacy Awareness Month comes to a close, here’s a look back at SFEPD’s efforts and activities to promote financial literacy.

Celebrating Financial Literacy Month: Wells Fargo Foundation and SFEPD Partner to Empower Students

In recognition of Financial Literacy Month, the Wells Fargo Foundation partnered again with the Society for Financial Education and Professional Development (SFEPD) to deliver financial education to students at:

  • Alexandria City High School (Alexandria, VA)
  • Columbia Heights Education Campus (Washington, DC)
  • Ida B. Wells Middle School (Washington, DC)
  • Mount Vernon High School (Alexandria, VA)
  • Prince George's Community College (Largo, MD)

Wells Fargo volunteers led Hands on Banking sessions, helping students develop skills in budgeting, smart shopping, and making informed financial choices. The program also introduced students to SFEPD and its Student Ambassador Programs at Bowie State University, Howard University, and Morgan State University, and offered guidance on financial preparation for college.

Student Ambassador Program

Shoutout to our amazing SFEPD Student Ambassadors for making Financial Literacy Week 2026 a huge success!

Your energy, leadership, and commitment to helping others be “Money Smart. Future Ready.” were on full display all week long. From hosting interactive workshops and game nights to sparking great conversations at campus booths, you helped your peers level up their money management skills and take charge of their financial futures. We’re so proud of everything you accomplished—keep up the phenomenal work!

Aspen Institute Highlights SFEPD’s Peer-to-Peer Financial Education Impact

We’re honored to be featured by The Aspen Institute Financial Security Program in this thoughtful Q&A highlighting the power of peer-led financial education.

The conversation includes insights from SFEPD Founder Theodore Daniels and SFEPD Student Ambassador Charniece Jones from Tuskegee University, and explores how our model is expanding access to financial knowledge, building pathways to economic mobility, and empowering young adults, particularly at HBCUs, to lead within their communities.

We appreciate the opportunity to share more about our mission and the impact of this work!

Jump$tart Coalition Partners Meeting & Annual Awards Luncheon

SFEPD was proud to participate in the  Jump$tart Coalition Partners Meeting and Annual Awards Luncheon, joining national leaders and organizations dedicated to advancing financial education for students. Jump$tart’s network includes more than 100 national partner organizations and 51 state affiliates spanning business, finance, education, government, and academia—all working together to promote financial capability and “financial smarts for students.” SFEPD values the opportunity to engage with fellow advocates, share insights, and strengthen partnerships that support our mission of expanding financial literacy nationwide.

Average Net Worth by Age: How Do You Measure Up?

A recent Kiplinger report, using 2022 Federal Reserve System Survey of Consumer Finances data, highlights how net worth typically grows with age as households build savings, home equity, retirement accounts, and investments over time. While the average U.S. household net worth exceeded $1 million, the median was $192,900—showing how wealth disparities can significantly skew averages. The data reinforces the importance of early financial education, consistent saving, debt management, and long-term planning to help individuals build wealth across every life stage.
