National Wealth Inequality

During our recent SFEPD Quarterly Talk with Ted, we explored the deep and persistent wealth gaps in America. Ana Hernández Kent, senior researcher on the Community Development Research team at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, shared findings from their recent studies.

In Q4 2024, the top 10% of households by wealth averaged $6.9 million and held 67% of total U.S. household wealth. Meanwhile, the bottom 50% held an average of just $51,000 and collectively owned only 2.5%. These disparities underscore the urgency of advancing financial education and access for underserved communities.
