Haiti Worsens... Challenges Increase for Bondeau

While it seems utterly impossible for the situation in Haiti to get worse... the last 2 months have seen violence and gang activity spreading outside of Port Au Prince causing the inability of travel between Leogane and Bondeau. This affects not only individuals traveling, but movement of all kinds of supplies to as well. All aspects of life have been affected.

Of grave concern is the lack of food for Bondeau. Shelves have been bare in Miragoane... markets are not functioning and wide-scale demonstrations have virtually shut down the country twice in January.

These quotes from US Institute of Peace describe the situation:

"Haiti’s governance vacuum triggered by President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination in July 2021 shows few encouraging signs. Violence, notably around Port-au-Prince, has not only grown in lethality, but politically has become the central issue shaping domestic and international discussions. The imminent expiration of acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s term in office on February 7 means Haiti’s political crisis is on course to become more intransigent... To suggest that the country is at a breaking point understates the gravity of the situation"

"...reference to 'gang violence' misjudges the scope, structure and sociology of the problem. The near absence of state-provided security... creates a void where not only gangs flourish but also private security and vigilante justice emerges, further degrading the rule of law. Nor is this phenomenon limited to the capital. While the Port-au-Prince area gets much of the media attention, the rest of Haiti, including farming communities, are at risk of succumbing to the ongoing collapse of law and order."

URGENT NEED: No Food for School Lunches!

All supplies are now gone for lunch to be served to the 380 Bondeau students each day

The situation is dire... all food is depleted from last year's Food Packing event. Pere Phanord has this past week found a warehouse in Miragoane that will sell rice and beans in a bulk purchase to provide food for the student lunches until the end of this school year in July. This will cost $12,000 for these 42,000 lunches (380 students x 111 school days). That is only 29 cents per meal.

Will you please help us buy this food for the school lunches?

Bon Samaritain School Enrollment Increases to 380!

In spite of all that is happening in Haiti,

Bon Samaritain School continues to grow.

In temporary classrooms now, Grade 1-8 students withstand increased exposure to rain and sun. And yet, they remain focused on education. These students and family realize that education is their hope for a brighter future.

Together they persevere, even though the existing Bon Samaritain School primary building (Grades 1-8) is now unsafe due to the August 2021 earthquake. Education continues!

The Secondary School building completed in 2016 is still functioning for Grades 9-13 and the new Kindergarten building completed in 2022 is at a maximum of 35 students per class (3 classes).

Your contributions are what make education happen in Bondeau! THANK YOU for your gifts that bring hope and a brighter future to now 380 students of Bon Samaritain.

THANK YOU from Pere Phanord

Earthquake Repair Update

Rebuilding the Friendship House

On August 14, 2021 a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti with the epicenter only about 30 miles from Bondeau. While no buildings in Bondeau collapsed, the Guest House received critical damage rendering it unsafe. This vital building housed Pere Phanord (Priest-in-charge) and 15 other community members as well as anyone who visited Bondeau (mission teams/pilgrimages, healthcare professionals, teacher training staff).

Work began in January 2023 and now it is almost complete as the rebuilding of the newly re-named Friendship House continues. The total cost is $160,000 and already $129,351 has been raised and used. Now only the installation of doors, toilets, sinks, kitchen appliances, and beds still need to be funded and completed-- leaving a balance of only $30,648.74 needed. Please donate to help complete this building to provide this housing and hospitality!

I have more "stuff" than I need, but there are children and families in Bondeau, that don't even have food to eat.
