Linking SFI Certification and Climate Smart Forestry
The  Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)  invites you to attend a webinar exploring a qualitative assessment and associated e-learning course that links SFI certification with carbon management and climate benefits. The project is being led by Michigan State University's Forest Carbon and Climate Program (MSU FCCP) in partnership with the Michigan SFI Implementation Committee.

MSU FCCP research has established the direct linkage between requirements of all three SFI Program Standards - Forest Management, Fiber Sourcing and Chain of Custody - and "Climate Smart Forestry." Climate Smart Forestry is an increasingly common term used to describe practices which help mitigate the impacts of climate change, both through carbon sequestration and forest health. Though not quantitative in nature, this project helps establish the premise that SFI's requirements are providing important climate benefits.

Results were used to build a professional e-learning module relative to the topic. The module is nested within a comprehensive forest climate learning series, which will be made available on MSU's and Society of American Forester's online platforms later this year.

This project is supported by an SFI Conservation and Community Partnership Grant and is part of  SFI's Conservation Impact portfolio, which is measuring and communicating conservation outcomes relative to biodiversity, carbon and climate resiliency, and water across the SFI footprint.

You are encouraged to attend this seminar if:
  • You are engaged in forest management or conservation-related work or research
  • You are interested in understanding and advancing conservation outcomes in SFI certified forests, and areas subject to SFI Fiber Sourcing
  • You are interested in communicating conservation impacts to wide-ranging audiences, including the value of forests toward climate change mitigation
  • You would like to learn about how SFI grants support conservation research and how results can help SFI Program Participants convey the value of their work
Presenters Include:
  • Dr. Darren Sleep, Senior Director, Conservation Strategies, Sustainable Forestry Initiative
  • Dr. Lauren Cooper, Department of Forestry, Forest Carbon and Climate Program Director, Michigan State University
The project partnership includes Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Weyerhaeuser, International Paper, Michigan SFI Implementation Committee, Society of American Foresters, and Michigan Forest Biomaterials Institute.

Please feel free to share this invitation with your colleagues, and let us know if you have any questions about this work, or the Conservation Impact project.
