The San Francisco Interfaith Council was born 34 years ago in response to two crises, an emerging homeless crisis and the Loma Prieta earthquake. Arguably the SFIC was called into existence by the City. As such, civic engagement has been a hallmark of the SFIC's service-oriented mission. Moreover, partnering with the City by exercising its moral voice and advocating on behalf of its diverse constituencies at strategic moments have been the means by which the Council has helped to effect constructive change. In addition to its role of providing legal representation for the City, the San Francisco City Attorney's Office has engaged the SFIC in cases ranging from restitution outreach to those in vulnerable communities preyed upon by predatory lenders, to lending its name on behalf of the faith-based social service agencies it counts as constituents in a lawsuit against the federal government which threatened to cut off critical funding because San Francisco is a Sanctuary City. This week's Online Briefing for Community & Faith Partners, hosted by the San Francisco Interfaith Council, welcomes newly elected City Attorney David Chiu, who will share his vision for the future of the Office, discuss important initiatives currently in the City Attorney's portfolio, and how San Francisco's communities of faith and religious institutions may partner to raise awareness about these important issues and be a voice for change.
