In 1988, San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos appealed to our City's faith leaders to help respond to an emerging homeless crisis. More specifically, he asked them to open
their doors, provide shelter, a home cooked meal and kindness, during the winter rainy season, to those who, for a variety of complex reasons, called the streets their home. What initially began as a one-year emergency shelter is now entering its 34th year and was the impetus for the formation of the San Francisco Interfaith Council. For its part,
50 congregations and affiliated organizations to feed and shelter between 60 to 100 clients daily from the Monday before Thanksgiving until the end of March. The need for our shelter, and the myriad of others, affirms that San Francisco's homeless challenges have not subsided. To address the core issues of homelessness, key components of its strategic planning process, new key initiatives and how faith communities can be a part of the solution, San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing Executive Director Shireen McSpadden will be this week's "Online Briefing for Community and Faith Partners" featured presenter.
