Magic Chartrand-Huff, Mentored Administrative Assistant
Hello, My name Is Magic Chartrand-Huff. I’m a member of Delaware Nation and I look forward to my role as the Mentored Administrative Assistant at the Southern First Nations Secretariat (SFNS). I’ve had prior experiences in working at SFNS in different roles and I can say that each time I’ve enjoyed working there and getting to know the staff over the years, as it’s always a pleasure working with them and learning new things. I have two crazy beautiful girls who’s names are Arianna and Amelia, and in our free time we like to go to the beach to collect rocks.

Aanii-Boozhoo! I am Daveigh Fletcher, a grade 12 student at West Elgin Secondary School, and I took my co-op placement at the Southern First Nations Secretariat (SFNS) from March 1, 2023 to the end of June 2023. For our Independent Study Project in the co-op course, we were given a series of different options, such as a co-op fair, presentation, or a commercial video to explain to students what our co-op placements are, their purposes, and the responsibilities we are given. I chose to do a co-op fair, which meant I had to create a tri-fold all about SFNS and my experience throughout the months of being here. I had a booth set up where students came and asked questions about the different departments, different member Nations we service, and what the environment feels like, along with smudging those who were interested.
At SFNS, one of my first responsibilities, which I am still working on today, was to create an Artwork Catalogue of all the artwork and offer them to Staff and our Member Nations. One of my props for my presentation was the artwork catalogues, I let students browse and ask questions about the pieces. I also explained in my presentation that I had helped the Post-Secondary department with scanning of files from different communities, assisted the Executive Director in the organization of HR files, and even created some files for those who needed an updated one. In my presentation, I was required to explain the skills I have developed at SFNS which included, organizational skills, social/communication skills, as well as my leadership skills and how I take the initiative as an Indigenous person. Overall, my presentation detailed the workplace, my duties and responsibilities, the work I have done and continue to do at SFNS along with what I have gained from it, which has been both positive and beneficial in possible future career opportunities.

Technical Services Department provides assistance in the following areas:
- Housing Inspection - CMHC certified inspections through all phases of construction.
- Computer Aided Design - offer GIS and AutoCAD conceptual design services.
- Capital Project Assistance - assistance provided for projects that enhance critical infrastructure.
- Training - opportunities to increase capacity among First Nation staff.
- Reporting - assistance provided with annual reporting related housing and infrastructure.

1: The post-secondary team would like to inform prospective students that while the application deadline of May 1st has passed, we do still have some funding availability and are accepting late applications. If you plan to attend a post-secondary institution in the Fall and have not already done so, please apply as soon as possible at https://sfnspse.ca/student/pseapplication.jsp.

Loneliness and Connection
| |
|
Loneliness is an evolutionarily adaptive emotion that helps us to seek out connections and form communities. However, it can also impact our mental health in negative ways. In order to understand loneliness, we must acknowledge that human connection is as important to our wellbeing as other needs such as food or water. Humans are social creatures by nature. Regardless of your personality type, there is no way to work around our deep need for connection to and with others.
It is common to go through feelings of loneliness. According to Statistics Canada, more than 10% of Canadians are always or often lonely. Changes and transitions can also trigger loneliness and many students in college and university experience loneliness as well. In 2019, the National College Health Assessment, which surveyed more than 55,000 students, found more than 69% reported feeling “very lonely” in the past year.

ISETP offers seven programs to assist clients:

1. Indigenous Skills Training Option
To assist clients in obtaining, maintaining, or increasing their current skill levels through a variety of training courses offered by recognised and accredited training institutions.
2. Indigenous Employee Skills Enhancement
To provide an opportunity to those members who are employed to upgrade their skills, to maintain their existing positions or to advance within their company/ organization.
3. Indigenous Job Creation Partnership
To support job creation and on-the-job training projects that meet the needs of the employer. It provides work experience to unemployed persons by creating temporary jobs.
4. Indigenous Labour Force Promotion Option
To create an opportunity for clients to gain access into the labour market by providing them with on-the-job work experience with potential employers.
5. Indigenous Business Initiative Program
To allow participants to concentrate on developing a sustainable business by providing then with financial assistance while they receive business advice and support.
6. Indigenous Summer Student Employment
To provide Indigenous students the opportunity to gain career related skills and practical on-the-job work experience during their summer break.
7. Indigenous New Start Program
In order for clients to successfully enter or re-enter the labour market, they may access employment supports that are critical to seeking and attaining employment.

Kathleen Doxtator - Oneida Nation Of The Thames
Panelist Juggles Teaching Career With Political Life And Entrepreneurship

Kathleen Doxtator is certainly one busy individual.
For starters, Doxtator, a member of the Oneida Nation of the Thames in southwestern Ontario, is a teacher on special assignment with the Thames Valley District School Board.
She travels to various schools within the board and offers Indigenous-themed classes.
“It all depends on the needs of the school,” Doxtator said, adding her school visits can range anywhere from a single day to several days in a row at the same school.

Ontario Gives Area First Nations Mental Health, Addictions Care $2M Boost

Kettle and Stony Point First Nation will share in more than $2 million in provincial funding to help provide several Southwestern Ontario Indigenous communities with access to traditional mental health and addictions treatment.
Kettle and Stony Point will receive $659,083, $1.1 million will go to the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, and Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre’s Chippewa and London sites will receive $273,375, the province said in a release.
It’s part of nearly $33 million in funding for more than 100 Indigenous mental health and addictions programs across Ontario, the province said.

Aamjiwnaang Woman Named To Prestigious Scholarship Award

An Aamjiwnaang First Nation woman and Lambton College student is among six Indigenous students named to a prestigious scholarship from Ontario Power Generation (OPG).
Robyn Gray will receive $10,000 to further her education, as part of the John Wesley Beaver Memorial Scholarship (JWBMS) program, OPG announced recently. The award, named after the notable engineer, who, before joining OPG’s Predecessor company in 1949 as a junior engineer, was a fighter pilot during the Battle of Britain and Chief of Alderville First Nation.
