RETIRED: Chief Fire Officer Certification – Associate Degree Requirement Exception
Effective January 1, 2021, State Fire Training started accepting applications for Chief Fire Officer Certification without an associate degree. This exception retired effective December 31, 2022. Any applications postmarked on or after January 1, 2023, will be required to submit their associate degree. Applicants should reference the Chief Fire Officer webpage for current requirements.
Curriculum Retirements
The following curriculum retired on December 31, 2022.

NWCG Course Updates
In order to align with NWCG standards, State Fire Training has updated the Course Plans for a number of NWCG based courses. This alignment results in lower total class sizes and smaller instructor to student ratios for many of the updated classes. Agencies and Instructors should review the updated course plans available at FSTEP Curriculum (ca.gov) to determine potential agency impacts and scheduling needs. Agencies will be required to comply with the updated course plans effective July 1st, 2023.
