Curriculum and Certification Retirements

The following courses will retire from the SFT Catalog on December 31, 2026, and will be replaced by updated versions:


As a reminder, Candidates actively pursuing instructor registration for any of the retiring courses listed above must submit all documentation postmarked on or before the deadline listed in their respective implementation plans (linked above) 


Candidates pursuing the corresponding certification(s) must complete and submit the corresponding application and Certification Task Book postmarked on or before the following dates. Candidates who do not meet this deadline will be required to meet the new certification version requirements using the updated Task Books.


December 31, 2026:

  • Executive Chief Fire Officer (2014)
  • Fire Inspector 1 (2014)
  • Fire Inspector 2 (2014)

June 30, 2027:

  • Chief Fire Officer (2014)
  • Fire Marshal (2016)
  • Plan Examiner (2014)

Credit Card Processing Fee Change

Effective August 4th, 2026, The credit card processing fee for transactions via the State Fire Training (SFT) User Portal has been reduced from the former 2.99% to 2.3%.

SFT Staff Retirements

State Fire Training (SFT) extends its sincere gratitude and congratulations to Diane Radford and Kirsten Fonseca as they retire following many years of dedicated service to the State of California and the fire service community.

Kirsten retires after an incredible 34 years of State service, including more than 20 years with the Office of the State Fire Marshal and SFT. Throughout her career, she supported countless courses, certifications, instructors, students, and stakeholders, bringing a wealth of experience and institutional knowledge to the program.


Diane retires after 12 years of State service, all with SFT. During that time, she supported nearly every aspect of our daily operations and was a familiar and helpful presence for staff and stakeholders alike.


Together, Diane and Kirsten leave SFT with 46 years of combined State service. We are incredibly grateful for their dedication, friendship, and contributions to SFT and wish them both happiness and many new adventures in retirement.


Curriculum and Certification Updates

 

Fire Apparatus Driver Operator (2024)

SFT updated the Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator (2024) curriculum in alignment with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1010: Standard on Professional Qualifications for Firefighters (2024). This curriculum was developed to ensure effective fire apparatus roles and responsibilities in California fire agencies. Effective December 31, 2026, SFT will retire the 2014 courses.


Existing Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator instructors in good standing will receive email notification to complete an online update/acknowledgement in the SFT User Portal to teach the new courses.

S -212 Curriculum Update

SFT has updated the S-212 Course Plan Required Resources, Facilities, Equipment, and Personnel sections in alignment with updated NWCG Wildland Fire Chain Saws Course Materials to reflect 2025 NFPA updates. Existing instructors do not need to complete an update but must review the updated course plan.

Accredited Academy Updates

 

ARTP/ALA Accreditation Updates

CAL FIRE Training Centers, Cosumnes Fire Department, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, Hayward Fire Department, and Santa Monica Fire Department have been approved for reaccreditation. Compton College has been approved for accreditation. Congratulations to our Accredited Academies!
