TASCHLICH - LET'S THROW AWAY THOSE SINS
On the second day of Rosh Hashanah, here at the JCC, you will see folks carrying bags of old bread. Why? They will be walking across the boulevard to the Yacht Club to ceremonially
throw pieces of bread that represent their sins into the bay.
The sea gulls mark this day on their calendar too !!!!!
This year, join Rabbi Jay VIRTUALLY Sunday the 20th at 6:00 PM on Zoom as he walks from the Bay to the Ocean. You can walk along with him virtually or go to a body of water near you at the same time. Or, you may want to do your own thing. Here is a beautiful prayer to recite.
We Cast Away Our Sins
We cast away the sins of our eyes:
for looking down on others;
for failing to to appreciate the good in
others and in the world;
for being quick to notice others' faults.
We cast away the sins of our lips:
for speaking offensively and recklessly;
for speaking lies and half-truths;
for breaching confidence, and for sharing that which didn't need to be shared;
for mocking and shaming neighbors and strangers;
for uttering false promises;
for remaining silent when we should have spoken up;
for speaking up when we should have remained silent;
for disparaging the religious beliefs and practices of others;
for failing to express gratitude to God and to others for the blessings we have.
We cast away the sins of our hands:
for being tight-fisted in the face of others in need;
for being inactive when the times demanded action;
for clenching our fists in anger and resentment;
for disturbing the sanctity of holy moments and holy days.
We cast away the sins of our hearts:
for lacking compassion; for envying what others have;
for pretending emotions we did not feel; for hating without cause;
for being half-hearted in our commitments to our tradition.
We cast away the sins of our minds:
for rationalizing our behavior;
for using the sins of others to excuse our own;
for passing judgment without knowledge of the facts;
for remembering the prices of things but forgetting their value;
for forgetting that our world has only one All-Powerful Source.
We cast away the sins of our bodies:
for poisoning ourselves and others with dangerous substances;
for acting on our worst impulses;
for running to evil but limping to good.
Dear God, purify our hearts; renew our spirits. Help us to cast away these sins in sincerity and truth; And help us to remain strong throughout the year to keep them away
