It is commanded that on Sukkot and Simchat Torah we be joyful. And joyful we were! We had a wonderful response to each and every Service.
We danced, we sang, we laughed - virtually of course. Below you will see some of Ushpizin, special guests, who joined us for the holiday.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI....
And so the story begins again. Creation and re-creation. A world imagined and re-imagined. The story of how God began making the world is not the story of creating something from nothing. Instead, if you read the Text closely, as God began, something already existed. We are told that the earth was “unformed and void” and that a wind from God was sweeping over the water. Thus, the Text tells us that at the very least earth and water were already present as the creation began.
If something already existed, then the story is not so much about “creation” as it is about “change”. Throughout the story there are transformations and alterations. Light is added. Heaven and earth and water are separated. Vegetation is added. Swarming things are added. Animals and man are added. It is change upon, change, upon change. Man is placed in the garden and man is removed from the garden. And the change does not end in Parashat Bereishit.
Indeed, at its core, the Torah is a book about change, upon change, upon change. To be certain it is managed modification, but it is change nonetheless.
This year we have needed to change. We have needed to create. What a job we have done. We could have left the world in chaos. Instead, we followed God’s example and made order out of the chaos and created something of beauty. To the entire JCC community, to the Executive Board, to the Board, to the committees, to the Cantor, to the Rebbetzin, to the volunteers, to the entire office staff, to everyone who joined us for services and our various programs……KOL HA-KAVOD! To each of you goes the honor. I am in awe of all that you have accomplished. I think the Yiddish word is “Wow!”.
We looked around us to see what could be changed and then, like God, in Whose image we were created, we took the steps to facilitate those changes. And there was light.
Shabbat shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

.JCC WOMENS AUXILIARY: BOOK GROUP DISCUSSION
THE 3RD WEDNESDAY, AT 4:00 PM
Rashi's Daughters (3 book series) by
|
|
In this novel, the year is 1068, and Rashi, a Jewish scholar is secretly teaching Talmud to his daughters. The oldest daughter, Joheved, has a passion for learning, but must keep it a secret in the medieval Jewish world. This story is based on the lives of real people.
|
|
The second novel in a dramatic trilogy set in eleventh-century France about the lives and loves of three daughters of the great Talmud scholar
Rashi’s middle daughter, Miriam, is determined to bring new life safely into the Troyes Jewish community and becomes a midwife. As devoted as she is to her chosen path, she cannot foresee the ways in which she will be tested and how heavily she will need to rely on her faith. With Rashi's Daughters, author Maggie Anton brings the Talmud and eleventh-century France to vivid life and poignantly captures the struggles and triumphs of strong Jewish women.

Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 4:00 PM
The dramatic final book in the epic historical trilogy about the lives and loves of the three daughters of the great Talmud scholar Rashi
Rachel is the youngest and most beautiful daughter of medieval Jewish scholar Salomon ben Isaac, or "Rashi." Her father's favorite and adored by her new husband, Eliezer, Rachel's life looks to be one of peaceful scholarship, laughter, and love. But events beyond her control will soon threaten everything she holds dear. Marauders of the First Crusade massacre nearly the entire Jewish population of Germany, and her beloved father suffers a stroke. Eliezer wants their family to move to the safety of Spain, but Rachel is determined to stay in France and help her family save the Troyes yeshiva, the only remnant of the great centers of Jewish learning in Europe.
