A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
In this week’s Torah portion, Lech Lecha, God tells Abraham to go to a land that God promises to show to Abraham. It is the beginning of a new journey for Abraham and Sarah and for God. God had an idea. The Deity wanted Abraham, Sarah, and their tribe, to be set apart. God wanted to make a new nation of them and to bless them.
It is easy to miss the story’s basic premise of starting something new. God wanted to do something with Abraham and Sarah that had not been done before. The story is therefore an exciting one. However, it was also fraught with uncertainty. Would Abraham and Sarah reach their destination safely? Will the journey be a success?
Beginning a new journey is never easy. However, as we learn from Abraham and Sarah a new endeavor can bring many rewards.
This year, as a result of covid 19, the JCC has begun a new journey of its own. We have entered, and embraced, the world of virtual services and programming. It has forever changed who we are and what we do.
Before covid, right about now, we would be winding down our programming and starting to plan for next year. We would have services on Friday and Saturday, but attendance would be lighter than over the summer. Now, we are having Daily Zoom minyans, morning and night. Classes will shortly begin, with programs virtually every day of the week. In addition to weekly Torah study, we have a class on Family dynamics in the Torah. We have a class on the Israeli Palestinian conflict. We have a class on Jewish humor. We have book clubs and movie discussion night. We are teaching beginners Hebrew. We are going to have special Friday night services with guest leaders like our High Holy Day Cantor, Sarah Geller. We are going to have special mini-programs on each of the 8 nights of Hanukkah. Wow!
The Pandemic could have affected us negatively. However, thanks to each of you, and your ability to shift focus and turn lemons into lemonade, the JCC is active and keeping us connected. We are Abraham and Sarah. We have set off on a journey to a new world. Each of us who have embraced this trip have reaped the reward of a new and different community.
This is an exciting time to become involved with the JCC. I look forward to virtually seeing you at services, classes, discussions, programs, and more.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at mjayrab@gmail.com.
Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

In this novel, the year is 1068, and Rashi, a Jewish scholar is secretly teaching Talmud to his daughters. The oldest daughter, Joheved, has a passion for learning, but must keep it a secret in the medieval Jewish world. This story is based on the lives of real people.
|
|
The second novel in a dramatic trilogy set in eleventh-century France about the lives and loves of three daughters of the great Talmud scholar
Rashi’s middle daughter, Miriam, is determined to bring new life safely into the Troyes Jewish community and becomes a midwife. As devoted as she is to her chosen path, she cannot foresee the ways in which she will be tested and how heavily she will need to rely on her faith. With Rashi's Daughters, author Maggie Anton brings the Talmud and eleventh-century France to vivid life and poignantly captures the struggles and triumphs of strong Jewish women.

Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 4:00 PM
The dramatic final book in the epic historical trilogy about the lives and loves of the three daughters of the great Talmud scholar Rashi
Rachel is the youngest and most beautiful daughter of medieval Jewish scholar Salomon ben Isaac, or "Rashi." Her father's favorite and adored by her new husband, Eliezer, Rachel's life looks to be one of peaceful scholarship, laughter, and love. But events beyond her control will soon threaten everything she holds dear. Marauders of the First Crusade massacre nearly the entire Jewish population of Germany, and her beloved father suffers a stroke. Eliezer wants their family to move to the safety of Spain, but Rachel is determined to stay in France and help her family save the Troyes yeshiva, the only remnant of the great centers of Jewish learning in Europe.
