In this week’s Torah portion, Terumah, God tells Moses to have each Israelite bring God gifts in accordance with how his/her heart moves him/her. God then instructs them to use the gifts to “make Me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them”.
The Sanctuary/dwelling (hereinafter “Sanctu-dwelling”) enables God to be with the Israelites as they wander in the desert. Later it will become a stationary home in Jerusalem. Still later it will be represented by Synagogues that are built all over the world. We are taught from a young age that God can be found in each of them.
I pose the following question: “When does a sanctu-dwelling become a home?”
To answer this question, look at our JCC community:
This past Shabbat morning we had 32 women participate in the Women’s Zoom Shabbat Service. Women lead the davening, read the Torah, had all of the Aliyahs, and gave the D’var Torah. They were also working behind the scenes as the Rebbetzin was the Zoom director. The sanctu-dwelling was a home on Shabbat Morning.
Last week we had a musical Kabbalat Shabbat led by college student, Julian Brenman. After services, 36 people went into 6 breakout rooms to share Shabbat dinner together. The sanctu-dwelling was a home on Shabbat evening.
This past Sunday evening we had a concert featuring David Babinet singing Opera, Broadway, and Yiddish songs, followed by a wine tasting, Around 80 of us sang along (while on mute) and learned about (and sipped) good wine. The Sanctu-dwelling was a home on Sunday evening.
This past Wednesday evening, after we had learned that Benjamin Riffle had Covid and had been placed on a ventilator, we held a healing service that was attended by family, friends, and a score of concerned congregants. The Sanctu-Dwelling was a home on Wednesday evening.
This evening, we had a program about Leonard Bernstein moderated by a guest lecturer, Larry Rosendorff. With the learning, the music, and the conversation, the Sanctu-dwelling was a home this evening.
This coming Shabbat, Shabbat Zakhor, we will celebrate the Bar Mitzvahversary of our congregant, Stu Lehrer. The Sanctu-dwelling will be a home on shabbat morning.
This coming Sunday, on Zoom, we will be baking Hamantaschen and talking about Purim. The sanctu-dwelling will be a home on Sunday morning.
Yes, God wants to dwell among the Israelites. But God doesn’t just want to dwell with the Israelites. God wants to “live” with them. And God wants them to live with God. To be clear, God wants to live with us and wants us to live with God.
When we do things together. When we pray, and sing, and eat, and learn, and cry as a community. When we share and care, we turn the space, God’s dwelling place, into a home.
God’s home is our home. Our home is God’s home. When you, and me, and God are home together, the world becomes a warmer, less foreboding, place. Hmmm, it becomes a sanctuary.
Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

SHABBAT ZACHOR
is the Shabbat immediately preceding Purim. Deuteronomy 25:17-19, describing the attack by Amalek, is recounted. There is a tradition from the Talmud that Haman, the antagonist of the Purim story, was descended from Amalek. .

What a tremendous weekend for the JCC of LBI Women's Auxiliary!
Saturday morning the women of the congregation - 32 strong- led Shabbat Services. Yasher Koach to those talented and dedicated women who
read responsively, led services, chanted special prayers, had aliyahs
and read from the Torah. The service was live streamed and is on our web site: LIVE STREAM
Sunday evening's Valentine concert and wine tasting was a great success. Cantor David Babinet regaled us with his beautiful rendition of Figaro and the Toreador Song, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miz, My Yiddisha Mama and Romania as well as an encore of selections. The concert was topped of with a session on wine tasting and questions and answers. Thank you to David Shatz, Jill Denker, Cliff Denker and Irene Babst and Stuart Pepose for putting this all together. And a special thanks for the gracious donors who underwrote the program: David & Karen Shatz, Beth Zemble & Phil Rosenzweig, Renee & Rob VanNaarden, Sherry & Howard Fruchterman, Sandy & Jay Solan and the JCC Women's Auxiliary.

Thursday night's program about Leonard Bernstein was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Our guest lecturer, Larry Rosendorf, presented an overview of Bernstein and his many talents with videos of his interviews, performances and an insight into his liturgical compositions for both synagogues and churches.
Larry will be visiting us again on Thursday evening, March 4th with a program reviewing award-wining short films. Larry has lectured at the OLLI programs at the University of South Carolina, Bluffton, SC.
Here are the films for you to view before the 4th (a total of about 1 1/2 hours of viewing)..
