LEGACY PROJECT - SEASON I EPISODE IV

This week you will hear from Linda & Ron Marr. Linda first came to LBI as a toddler to visit family and now is a year-round resident with her husband, Ron.
Thanks to Diane Buskirk for suggesting the project and to her daughter, Dr. Allison Buskirk Cohen, for being such an able interviewer.

A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
This week’s Torah portion provides the instruction to have a continuously burning oil lamp in the portable Tabernacle. From the Jewish Virtual Library we learn that An Eternal Light (Ner Tamid) hangs above the ark in every synagogue. It is often associated with the menorah, the seven-branched lamp stand which stood in front of the Temple in Jerusalem. It is also associated with the continuously-burning incense altar which stood in front of the Ark (see First Kings Chapter 6).
Where once the Ner Tamid was an oil lamp, as was the menorah which stood outside the Temple, today most are fueled by either gas or electric light bulbs. The Eternal Lights are never extinguished or turned off.

But what is the purpose of the eternal light? While our sages interpreted the Ner Tamid as a symbol of God's eternal and imminent Presence in our communities and in our lives, is it possible that there is another reason?
Maybe an answer can be found in the way the lamp was used. The original needed to be lit by pure olive oil. Pure olive oil required a lot of work. In order to obtain it, a tree needed to be tended to, and the olives needed to be grown, ripened and harvested.  Once harvested, the olives would need to be pressed and the oil filtered. This required people to work hard and to pay attention.

So, while the light is a reminder of God’s eternal and imminent presence, it is capable of being lit because of man’s handiwork. The light therefore is also an example of God and man working together to ensure an ongoing connection between the creator and the created.

We had a great Purim evening with 70 people hearing the Megillah being read.  What an awesome community our JCC is. Now to turn our thoughts to Passover. My first suggestion? It is time to cut back on purchases of Chametz!

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are also welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.
