JCC OF LBI COMMUNITY SEDER
Rabbi & Sheri Jay invite you to join them at their Zoom Seder table for the JCC of LBI Community Seder on Sunday evening at 6:00 PM. Rabbi will lead an interactive Seder and, if you are interested, create a breakout room for you to join others for dinner.

LEGACY PROJECT - SEASON I EPISODE VI

Here is our final video in the first Legacy Series. Rabbi Michael Jay will share with you his vision for the JCC of LBI.

Thanks to Diane Buskirk for suggesting the project and to her daughter, Dr. Allison Buskirk Cohen, for being such an able interviewer.,
If you missed the first five videos in our Legacy Series, they can be found on the JCC web site:

A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
At the beginning of the Seder, after we break the middle Matzah (Yakhatz), we uncover the remaining Matzot, raise them up for all to see, and proclaim:

  • This is the bread of affliction which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt.

  • Whoever is hungry, come and eat;

  • Whoever is in need, come and join this Pesach gathering.

  • This year we are here; next year may we be in the Land of Israel.

This year we are slaves; next year free people.

Matzah
There are a few things striking about this piece of tableside theater. We have shown the Matzah and broken it. It is fragile. It breaks easily. It crumbles. Its physical strength is minimal. But in its ability to conjure memories and to evoke miracles, it has an unparalleled strength to hold a people together.

The matzah was necessary to provide energy, substance, and support. However, it is the proclamation that provides purpose, and meaning. Yes, Matzah is the bread of our affliction, but if you are hungry, we will share it with you. If you are needy we will make a spot at the table for you.

This is the beginning of a night in which we are recalling our enslavement and our redemption. And, yet, we start it by inviting those less fortunate than us to join us. To be clear, we don’t invite folks after we have been freed. The invite comes when we still may not even have enough for ourselves. A righteous people (deserving of redemption) shares even when it does not have enough for itself.

But the proclamation goes even further than that. The language is clear. It offers sustenance to those who are “hungry” AND to those in “need”. “Hunger” and “need” are not the same and yet this poor people, eating the bread of affliction, is willing to invite others in and to offer help. What an obligation is being placed upon us. What a burden. What an honor.

The first three lines of the proclamation are important and they give us direction and purpose. But the last two lines give us hope. And hope is powerful. Read the last two lines in the context of the Seder, and the message is energizing. But now read them in today’s context:

This year we are here (Still in the midst of a pandemic)(in small groups and/or on zoom). Next year may we be free to travel to physically be at any Seder we like. Even one in Jerusalem.
This year we are slaves to Covid. Next year may we be free of the virus and all of the shackles it places upon us.

This week as we get ourselves ready for Shabbat and take a break from Passover preparation, may we see the strength given by the bread of affliction, may we sustain the hungry (whether they hunger for food or something else), may we support the needy, may we find joy in being here, may we be redeemed from whatever enslaves us, and may we have hope for a future when we can have our Seder “here”, “there”, or “anywhere”.

Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are also welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.
