WE HAD TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
A friend sent me a copy of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks’, Z”L, book entitled: “Judaism’s Life-Changing Ideas”, as a gift. In it, Rabbi Sacks introduces the reader to one Life-Changing idea from each Torah portion. (He provides 56 such ideas in all) What a great read; what a great gift.

For Parashat Ki Tissa, Rabbi Sacks wrote about an issue raised by Moses angrily breaking the original 10 Commandments after he sees the Israelites praying to the golden calf. Rabbi Sacks points out that Moses is never punished for his outburst. In fact, he appears to be rewarded. Moses has the honor of writing the new tablets and it is Moses’ tablets that will go into the Ark of the Covenant.

Rabbi Sacks poses an interesting question: Is it ever acceptable for a leader (like Moses) to express anger? For an answer, he looked to Maimonides who said:

Anger is an extremely bad attribute, and one should distance oneself from it by going to the other extreme. One should train oneself not to get angry, even about something to which anger might be the appropriate response….The ancient sages said, “One who yields to anger is as if he worshiped idols.” They also said, “Whoever yields to anger , if he is wise, his wisdom deserts him, and if he is a prophet, his prophecy leaves him.” And “The life of an irascible person Is not a life.” Therefore, they have instructed us to keep far from anger, training ourselves to stay calm even in the face of provocation. This is the right way.(Mishneh Torah, Hilkhot Deot 2:3)

However, Rabbi Sacks points out that Maimonides adds an important qualification:

If one wants to instill reverence in his children and family, or in public if he is the head of the community, and his desire is to show them his anger so as to bring them back to the good, he should appear to be angry with them so as to reprove them, but he must inwardly remain calm as if he were acting the part of an angry man, but in reality he is not angry at all.

Thus, according to Maimonides, it is okay to “express” anger, as long as you are actually not angry and he uses the anger to teach a lesson. Is it really possible that Moses was not really angry when he shattered the 10 Commandments, but that he was only “acting” angry in order to make a point? Have we as parents or teachers ever used anger to teach a lesson?

And from this story Rabbi sacks derives his Life Changing idea #21: We should never feel anger, but there are times when we should show it. People sometimes need that shock to help them change their lives.

Perhaps this is a lesson to be utilized as we begin to prepare for Passover, if someone in the house chooses now to have a truckload of bagels delivered to the house.

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are also welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.
