HIGH HOLIDAY UPDATE

Rosh Hashanah is LESS THAN 3 weeks away.

Join Rabbi Michael Jay and Hazzan Sara Geller for High Holiday services whether IN-PERSON or on ZOOM. We are excited about all that is planned for the Holy Days.

Please send your High Holiday forms in as soon as possible. The printed form should be sent to the JCC office, 2411 Long Beach Boulevard, Spray Beach, NJ 08008. You can send your fillable form to jccoflbi@gmail.com or respond to this address.\

NO IN-PERSON TICKETS WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT THE PROPER VACCINATION DOCUMENTATION RECEIVED BY THE JCC OFFICE.

Below are the links for the Ticket Reservation Form: (1) Printable Document and (2) Fillable Version. You can make your payment for tickets, greetings and Book of Remembrance via mail or online on our website. If you have a JCC account with Rakefet and want to charge your seats and Book of Remembrance, there is now a category for that on Rakefet. Also if you want to pay for a Greeting, that goes to the General Fund.

While things are subject to change based on circumstances as they unfold, the board has determined that this is the best way to proceed at this time. Rest assured we will keep you posted on any changes.

A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Last week, as the month of Elul began, we started blowing the Shofar every morning. I used to do this, mostly by myself, on the 24th Street beach. I would get some interesting looks from others who happened to be on the beach at 7:00 in the morning. Now, at the conclusion of our Zoom services in the morning, Stu Lehrer blows the shofar for all who are assembled on the link.  Each time it is a special moment.

Inasmuch as the Shofar’s call is a reminder of the importance of this time of year to us, individually and communally, the fact that there are more who are experiencing the daily “toot” is a good thing. Join us! Minyan starts at 8:15 am but, if you are busy, come on at about 8:45 to hear the Shofar.

Parashat Ki Tetzeh is full of important ideas which are intended to help the Israelites (and ultimately us) to become a holy nation. One message of this portion might go overlooked because it is not specifically spelled out. However, I believe it is a key to who we are as a people. The principle can be found in the following verse:

If you see your kinsman’s donkey or ox fallen on the road, do not ignore it; you must help him raise it. (Deut. 22:4)

At first blush, one might read this verse and think, “Of course it’s nice to help someone in need.” But, look at the verse closely and consider what it is really saying. It cannot be denied that a fallen animal means that the animal is in danger. But it also means that the owner may suffer (economically or physically). Now, if one is walking quickly to work, or if someone has someplace that he/she “needs” to be, it would be very easy to “ignore” the fallen animal and walk by. However, the Torah is saying, Moses is saying, God is saying: “YOU CANNOT IGNORE A PROBLEM THAT IS IN FRONT OF YOU!”

So the verse requires us to help our kinsman. What is the bigger message being given? Rabbi Jonathan Sacks explained it best:

…[I]ts real significance lies in telling us what (Israelite) society should look like. It is a place where people are good neighbors, and are willing to help even a stranger in distress. Its citizens care about the welfare of others. When they see someone in need of help, they don’t walk by.

The verse is not just about the fallen animal and the animal’s owner. It is telling us about anyone in need of help. The Torah is requiring us to be vigilant in our support of those around us. Our tradition has us continually calling out: “Hineini”, “I am here”.

As we continue to prepare for the high holy days, remember that the biggest present you can give to anyone is your presence.

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Apeirogon by Colum McCann
Bassam Aramin is Palestinian. Rami Elhanan is Israeli. They inhabit a world of conflict that colors every aspect of their lives, from the roads they are allowed to drive on to the schools their children attend to the checkpoints, both physical and emotional, they must negotiate.

But their lives, however circumscribed, are upended one after the other: first, Rami’s thirteen-year-old daughter, Smadar, becomes the victim of suicide bombers; a decade later, Bassam’s ten-year-old daughter, Abir, is killed by a rubber bullet. Rami and Bassam had been raised to hate one another. And yet, when they learn of each other’s stories, they recognize the loss that connects them. Together they attempt to use their grief as a weapon for peace—and with their one small act, start to permeate what has for generations seemed an impermeable conflict.
This extraordinary novel is the fruit of a seed planted when the novelist Colum McCann met the real Bassam and Rami on a trip with the non-profit organization Narrative 4. McCann was moved by their willingness to share their stories with the world, by their hope that if they could see themselves in one another, perhaps others could too.

With their blessing, and unprecedented access to their families, lives, and personal recollections, McCann began to craft Apeirogon, which uses their real-life stories to begin another—one that crosses centuries and continents, stitching together time, art, history, nature, and politics in a tale both heartbreaking and hopeful. The result is an ambitious novel, crafted out of a universe of fictional and nonfictional material, with these fathers’ moving story at its heart.

ENDOWMENT FUND - NEW INFORMATION !!!!!!!

Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio. Judith z”l & Donald Pripstein joined the Shapiros and established The Pripstein Family Endowment Fund.

As recently reported, Don Pripstein pledged another $50,000 to establish The Judith & Donald Pripstein Endowment Fund.

As a result of Don’s letter, Harold Farin has stepped forward and has established “The Farin Family Endowment Fund”. This Fund will join with the three others as part of the JCC Endowment Fund portfolio. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
