HIGH HOLIDAY UPDATE

Rosh Hashanah is LESS THAN 2 weeks away.

Join Rabbi Michael Jay and Hazzan Sara Geller for High Holiday services whether IN-PERSON or on ZOOM. We are excited about all that is planned for the Holy Days.

Please send your High Holiday forms in as soon as possible. The printed form should be sent to the JCC office, 2411 Long Beach Boulevard, Spray Beach, NJ 08008. You can send your fillable form to jccoflbi@gmail.com or respond to this address.\

NO IN-PERSON TICKETS WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT THE PROPER VACCINATION DOCUMENTATION RECEIVED BY THE JCC OFFICE.

Below are the links for the Ticket Reservation Form: (1) Printable Document and (2) Fillable Version. You can make your payment for tickets, greetings and Book of Remembrance via mail or online on our website. If you have a JCC account with Rakefet and want to charge your seats and Book of Remembrance, there is now a category for that on Rakefet. Also if you want to pay for a Greeting, that goes to the General Fund.

While things are subject to change based on circumstances as they unfold, the board has determined that this is the best way to proceed at this time. Rest assured we will keep you posted on any changes.

A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

As I have often mentioned from the Bimah and on Zoom, the month of Elul is one of reflection, introspection, and repentance. As the month draws to a close, the mood of repentance becomes more urgent and prayers for forgiveness called Selichot (properly pronounced "s'lee-KHOHT") are added to the morning prayers.

Selichot prayers are recited in the morning, but start late on Saturday night, from the Saturday before Rosh Hashanah until Yom Kippur. If Rosh Hashanah begins on a Monday or Tuesday, as they do this year, Selichot prayers begin on the Saturday evening of the week before Rosh Hashanah, to make sure that there are at least 3 days of Selichot. Hence, this year, our initial Selichot service is this coming Saturday night.

Why do we say Selichot prayers? We say them because much of the High Holy Day season is about giving and receiving forgiveness. Indeed, a fundamental part of the Selichot service is the repeated recitation of God’s Thirteen Attributes of Mercy: Adonai [1], Adonai[2], God [3], merciful [4], and gracious [5], long-suffering [6], abundant in goodness [7] and truth [8], keeping mercy unto the thousandth generation [9], forgiving iniquity [10] and transgression [11] and sin [12], who cleanses [13].

The Thirteen Attributes are repeated in order to show how merciful and forgiving God is. While we are certainly asking for God’s forgiveness, the implication is that we should be following God’s example and granting forgiveness as well.

This may seem cliché or trite, but before we can forgive others we need to forgive ourselves. Our first job as we approach the High Holy Days, as part of our “self” review, is to determine what we each need to forgive ourselves for and grant that forgiveness. Once we have granted “self”-atonement, we can then work on forgiving others and requesting forgiveness. Begin the process with yourself.

Hearing the Shofar can trigger us to think about change. You don’t have to wait until Rosh Hashanah to hear the Shofar. Join us every morning for services on zoom and you can hear the Shofar blown. Services start at 8:15; the shofar is blown around 8:50. If you cannot make services, call me and we can arrange for me to blow the shofar for you on the phone or on zoom!

As always, if you have questions or thoughts, please email me at mjayrab@gmail.com or call me on my cell phone, 973-865-9534.

SELICHOT
Selichot are penitential poems and prayers, especially those said in the period leading up to the High Holidays, and on Fast Days. In the Ashkenazic tradition, it begins on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah. If, however, the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Monday or Tuesday, Selichot are said beginning the Saturday night prior to ensure that Selichot are recited at least four times.

ENDOWMENT FUND - NEW INFORMATION !!!!!!!

Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio. Judith z”l & Donald Pripstein joined the Shapiros and established The Pripstein Family Endowment Fund.

As recently reported, Don Pripstein pledged another $50,000 to establish The Judith & Donald Pripstein Endowment Fund.

As a result of Don’s letter, Harold Farin has stepped forward and has established “The Farin Family Endowment Fund”. This Fund will join with the three others as part of the JCC Endowment Fund portfolio. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
