ROSH HASHANAH REVISITED

Preparing a hybrid service for the Holy Days was quite a challenge. How to engage our "roomers" and "zoomers" and to create a feeling of one united congregation? Monitors in the social hall and sanctuary allowed the roomers to see those on Zoom who had aliyahs and readings. Our zoomers could see the sanctuary and bimah. And everyone was able to see the Torah and Aaron Lombardi chanted the portion (for those in the building hearing Aaron on Zoom felt like it was coming from the heavens).

It was so good to finally have our Hazzan Sara Geller here on LBI in person. Her beautiful voice and warmth added so much to the service and her lesson on a portion of the liturgy was most appreciated. Rabbi Jay delivered two talks - one on what we believe and the other on Israel - and gave us something to think about.

Thank you to Gabbai Ira Morgenthal for calling those up for aliyot. Yasher Koah to those who had honors and readings. Also a shout out to our ushers who greeted everyone as they entered the building.
As many of you know Irwin A. Horowitz, father of Sheri and father-in-law of Rabbi Michael S. Jay, passed away early Monday morning just before the beginning of Rosh Hashanah. With the Rosh Hashanah holiday and Irwin's funeral today, I asked if I could help the Rabbi by writing the email message for this week.

IRWIN A. HOROWITZ
MARCH 20, 1936 – SEPTEMBER 6, 2021

Rudy and I met Irwin some 50 years ago when our children began playing Little League in Livingston, NJ. They, along with their friend Nick, coached our boys successfully through the ranks. We would also got together on LBI during summer vacations. Our three boys and Irwin's son David would play in the weekly Mr. T mini- golf tournaments. David would always take home first prize and our kids were so envious of that trophy on a a piece of unfinished wood that he would take home.

As the families grew up we ran into each other in town and shared stories of our kids achievements. But it was 12 years ago that the Horowitz family came back into our lives. Rabbi Jack, of blessed memory, was quite ill and could not conduct services in our brand new building that summer. We asked our congregants to reach out to Rabbis who would like to come down to the shore for a weekend, stay in the "parsonage" and conduct services. When I shared this story with a dear friend, she said she knew of a newly ordained Rabbi who might be interested (thank you Penny). I called "a Rabbi Jay" to speak to him about the opportunity and low and behold found that his wife was Sheri Horowitz. The rest is history.

At the funeral today, each of Irwin's four children spoke lovingly about their father and how much they admired him: his sense of humor and fun loving nature, the wise advise he imparted to them, their pride in his legal expertise and prowess. One of the things they remembered is how he loved to daven, that no one loved to pray more than their father. So when the pandemic came and kept him from going to minyan, he joined the JCC Zoom minyan every day. He became part of our minyan family and we all got to chat with him and gain, as his children did, from his unique wisdom and take on the Torah.

Many in the Jewish community agree that dying just before Rosh Hashanah means you’re a tzaddik. After all G-d waited for the year to be almost over before he closed the book on such a righteous person.

Thank you Irwin, a truly righteous man, for spending your last years with the JCC of LBI.

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are also welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.

ENDOWMENT FUND - NEW INFORMATION !!!!!!!

Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio. Judith z”l & Donald Pripstein joined the Shapiros and established The Pripstein Family Endowment Fund.

As recently reported, Don Pripstein pledged another $50,000 to establish The Judith & Donald Pripstein Endowment Fund.

As a result of Don’s letter, Harold Farin has stepped forward and has established “The Farin Family Endowment Fund”. This Fund will join with the three others as part of the JCC Endowment Fund portfolio. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
