A HOLIDAY MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

One long blast.
Three short blasts.
Nine very short blasts.
Again, one long blast.
Finally, one very long blast.
Why do we blow the Shofar in this peculiar pattern?

There is a lot written about why we blow the shofar on Rosh Hashanah.
Answers given include:
It is an alarm to wake us to our task of repentance;
It is God’s coronation clarion; or
It reminds us of the Ram caught in the thicket when Abraham almost sacrificed Isaac.

Few have addressed this question: “What is the meaning of the blasts of the shofar?”

The 17th century Rabbi and author, Rabbi Isaiah Levi Horowitz,
interpreted these blasts as corresponding to the stages in the process of teshuva/repentance.

Tekiah (One long blast)-                  We start out whole.
Shevarim (Three medium blasts)-    We break ourselves down.
Teruah (9 short/staccato blasts)-      Sometimes we are utterly shattered.
Tekiah Gedolah (A very long blast) - We emerge whole again, but stronger.

The Shofar, as a symbol, stimulates our senses in a number of ways. We see it, we feel it, and we hear it.

While, in many respects, the ram’s horn is the communal focal point of Rosh Hashanah. The message it gives is very personal. “Listen to me! Do the work you need to do. Change! Like me, you may break. But, in the end, you, also like me, will be whole again, and better for having had the experience.”

A Message from your Shabbat Reminder Editor

L'Shanah Tova to All. Thank you to so many of you who open our weekly email (and hopefully read it too).

Here is a look back on our Electronic Year:
250 Campaigns were sent
120,320 total emails were sent
59 % average open rate! Excellent
14 % click through rate: Could do better!!!
Our Contact List grew by 13% (130 new contacts)
It has been a year of growth for the JCC of LBI!

I would also like to take this opportunity to tell you that personally this have been a year of growth for me as well. I was so glad that we were having classes and services daily during the pandemic. Stuck home, each day I had something to look forward to: a chat with folks before morning services (just like when I was working and sharing with my fellow co-workers) and exchanging ideas with members of the JCC and Agudath Israel during our classes. There is so much to learn and I thank Rabbi Jay for guiding us through this time. As things hopefully return to "normal" the JCC will continue to educate in person and on Zoom. If you haven't joined us yet, please do. It will make a difference in your life as it did for me - and by osmosis my life partner, Rudy.

Look for the new classes this year in future emails and join us.

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are also welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.

ENDOWMENT FUND - NEW INFORMATION !!!!!!!

Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio. Judith z”l & Donald Pripstein joined the Shapiros and established The Pripstein Family Endowment Fund.

As recently reported, Don Pripstein pledged another $50,000 to establish The Judith & Donald Pripstein Endowment Fund.

As a result of Don’s letter, Harold Farin has stepped forward and has established “The Farin Family Endowment Fund”. This Fund will join with the three others as part of the JCC Endowment Fund portfolio. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
