Public comments on the proposal are now open until October 9, 2026. | | For nearly 40 years, federal laws have required municipal housing programs supported by HUD to meet specific accessibility standards. Those requirements are intended to ensure that people with mobility, hearing, and vision disabilities can live safely and independently in their homes. Solving Veteran Homelessness
| | NJDCA Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez and Vincent Solomeno III share the following Op-Ed on solving veteran homelessness in New Jersey. The op-ed covered how New Jersey built the Bringing Veterans Home program to make veteran homelessness, rare, brief, and nonrecurring. | | Unequal Burden: The Impact of Extreme Weather | | |
In 2025, the United States experienced 23 extreme weather events that each caused more than $1 billion in damage. These types of disasters are becoming more frequent, more intense, and more costly, and while these events affect communities nationwide, vulnerable populations feel the greatest impact. Housing constraints play a central role in shaping vulnerability to disasters. Disadvantaged communities often have fewer affordable housing options, which can force residents into locations with greater exposure to environmental risks. These may include flood-prone areas, neighborhoods with higher heat exposure, or regions more susceptible to storm damage. Read more about this story from SHA member Enterprise Community Partners.
SHA recently produced a white paper on Extreme Heat and Supportive Housing addressing how communities can meet the needs of safer housing for extreme heat events.
| | Proposed HUD Work Requirements Could Put Residents in Public and Assisted Housing at Risk of Housing Instability | | In March, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) proposed a rule that would allow housing providers to set work requirements and time limits for residents who receive assistance from HUD. Under the rule, local public housing agencies (PHAs) and private landlords participating in HUD’s project-based voucher or project-based rental assistance programs would have the option to set restrictions for nondisabled residents ages 18 to 61, such as requiring residents to work up to 40 hours a week and limiting their time in public or assisted housing to as little as two years. In theory, this means elderly and disabled residents would be exempt from any work requirements or time limits. However, evidence suggests these restrictions could still affect and access to housing assistance because of increased administrative burdens. | | How Community Ownership Creates Affordable Spaces, Local Power, and Lasting Community Wealth | | |
SHA member Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF) shares how community ownership is an approach to building local resources, neighborhood cohesion, and stronger local economies by enabling longtime residents, local workers, and community institutions – especially nonprofits – to own or control the assets that shape their lives. These assets can include land, housing, commercial real estate, energy infrastructure, and businesses. At its core, community ownership is about agency and alignment. It centers local knowledge, anchors community visioning, and strengthens trust. It creates mechanisms for shared governance, mutual problem-solving, and long-term ownership and control of assets. In doing so, it moves beyond community-informed or community-engaged models toward ones where communities shape outcomes, share in control, and retain lasting economic benefit.

| | H.R.1 Redetermination Community of Practice | | |
Bowling Business Strategies, in partnership with the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, presents the H.R.1 Community of Practice (CoP). The CoP equips behavioral health organizations with the knowledge, tools and peer and expert insights needed to navigate more frequent eligibility redeterminations. These sessions are offered at no cost and is designed to help providers understand, synthesize and apply upcoming redetermination changes. Participants will have access to 60-minute learning sessions and general resources on navigating H.R.1 redetermination changes.

This workshop will provide an introductory overview to the use of medications. The presentation will address key considerations for the use of medication including potential benefits, side effects, and other common concerns. The potential impact of effectively using behavioral strategies and environmental accommodations, along with supporting research, will also be discussed. In order to explore the effective coordination of these strategies, a case illustration will be reviewed, which exemplifies both positive impact and limitations for each of these strategies.
