A new economic impact report from the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey reveals that nonprofit community development organizations in New Jersey have generated an astounding $2.45 billion in economic activity across the state since 2019, creating more than 12,500 jobs and building 4,730 affordable homes.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Vinson who has been named NJACP’s next CEO after current CEO Valerie Sellers retires at the end of June.

Wellpoint New Jersey launched its “Take a Load off with Wellpoint” initiative hosting events at laundromats across the state, providing free laundry bags, detergent, and complimentary access to washing machines and dryers.

CSH premiered a new documentary in collaboration with Invisible People called Returning Home: Prison, Homeless, or Housing? The Choice That Changes Everything. The film spotlights two CSH programs: Returning Home Ohio and Community Transition Program. For more than a decade, these initiatives have helped more than 2,300 returning citizens rebuild their lives and avoid returning to jail or prison.

Congratulations to Volunteers of America Greater New York's President and CEO Jeffrey Ginsburg for being named one of City & State New York's 2025 Nonprofit Trailblazers!

Budget Reconciliation Bill Moves to Senate

House Republicans have passed the Budget Reconciliation Bill known by the President as One Big Beautiful Bill Act (215-214). The bill contains tax proposals passed by the Ways and Means Committee. Its provisions include the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act (AHCIA, H.R. 2725 / S. 1515) to expand and strengthen the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (Housing Credit), which would finance an additional 527,700 affordable homes over the next decade. The bill also includes an extension of tax cuts from the previous Trump Administration; cuts to Inflation Reduction Act programs and elimination or early phase out of some clean energy tax credits; and reductions to Medicaid. While House Republicans applaud the passage of the bill, it will likely go through several changes as it moves to the Senate, where Senators have signaled adjustments to the Medicaid changes and certain tax provisions.

Fair Housing Laws Weakening & Housing Effects

The following article shared by Shelterforce and co-published with ProPublica examines the weaking enforcement of Fair Housing laws and the effects it is having on people working to access housing. Starting with cases involving sexual orientation and identity, the Department of Housing and Urban Development is hobbling enforcement of the Fair Housing Act. Said one HUD attorney: “People are really being harmed by it.”

Another article from Shelterforce examines other impacts to housing that have occurred in the short time from the start of the current federal administration.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities released a statement on the passage of the House budget reconciliation bill explaining the dramatic harm that will happen due to healthcare and food assistance cuts. CBPP calls on the Senate to reject the bill to keep Americans safe. In New Jersey, the proposed $880 Billion in cuts would put $3.6 Billion on the state and cause hundreds of thousands to lose healthcare in NJ.

Op-Ed Perspectives on NJ Housing Crisis

Housing Delayed Is Justice Denied:

Every Town Must Do Its Part

In a new op-ed for NorthJersey.com, Jeff Carter of the NAACP New Jersey State Conference spells out the stakes of the housing affordability crisis. Rising rents, constrained supply, and increasing economic inequality have forced more residents into homelessness or unstable housing. Thanks to New Jersey’s new law strengthening the Mount Laurel Doctrine, more municipalities are creating affordable housing than ever before — though a small handful of wealthy towns are still attempting to evade their responsibilities.

You Can’t Cut Property Taxes While Opposing Affordable Housing

From Rev. Dobson at SHA member Fair Share Housing Center: New Jersey has a habit of talking in circles when it comes to affordability. Some elected officials say they want to lower property taxes — then reject one of the clearest paths to get there: building affordable housing, which adds more hard-working and tax-paying families to our towns. This failure reveals a misunderstanding of how communities flourish. Affordable housing isn’t charity. It’s infrastructure.

RWJF Interactive Health and Housing Resource

Where you live affects how you live as shown in the following interactive resource from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. All New Jerseyans should have the opportunity to live their healthiest life, with equitable access to affordable housing in the communities where they choose to live.

Analysis on Developing Federal Land into Housing

In an article published in The New York Times, a group of developers and researchers opine on the potential of unlocking federal land for housing development. The interviewed experts note that, while this strategy holds some promise for Western states like Nevada, there are major barriers to developing federal land into housing. These challenges include lack of access to necessary water and sewer infrastructure in certain locations outside of metro areas, potential effects on wildlife habitats, and local opposition to new residential development, among other issues.

Jersey City Council Votes Against AI in Rent Calculations

Jersey City officials voted recently to ban landlords from using software like RealPage to set rental costs amid growing concerns of price fixing. The Jersey City ordinance, passed unanimously by city council, still faces some concerns about how it would be enforced. Rental software firms RealPage and Yardi Systems have come under fire in lawsuits claiming landlords in Jersey City and elsewhere use confidential information to collude and hike prices, eliminating market competition.

Snapshot of Housing Imbalance for Aging New Jerseyans

A new snapshot from New Jersey Future highlights imbalance of housing and aging populations in NJ. The state is aging, with residents aged 65 and older comprising an increasing share of the total population. The two trends are converging in ways that should attract the concern of policy makers. A lack of aging-friendly housing options limits the number of places in New Jersey that older residents might call home as they seek to downsize.

Defending the Equal Access Rule

The Equal Access Rule ensures that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s housing programs are open to all eligible individuals and families, regardless of family composition, sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status. However, recent federal actions threaten these vital protections, creating burdens for providers and barriers for clients.
