SHJ HUMANISTIC JEWISH
ROLE MODEL

"It seems to me what is called for is an exquisite balance between two conflicting needs: the most skeptical scrutiny of all hypotheses that are served up to us and at the same time a great openness to new ideas."

--  "The Burden of Skepticism" in  Skeptical Inquirer
Vol. 12, Issue 1 (Fall, 1987)

T he Society for Humanistic Judaism has chosen Carl Sagan as the 2015-2016 Humanistic Jewish Role Model.  Sagan was a brilliant, award-winning scientist whose unique place in history was as a translator of hard science to the language of the heart.

November 9 is Carl Sagan Day and his birthday. A November Sagan program would be ideal, or a science-related celebration near February 12th for Darwin Day. Carl Sagan Day has its own website

There are beautiful videos available at the Carl Sagan Portal, on You-Tube, e.g. The Fifth Great Ape (Carl Sagan speaks Zeitgeist), and at Carl Sagan's Cosmos.

Sagan addresses the relationship between science and religion in his video, A Universe Not Made For Us.

Alana Shindler from Kol Hadash, No. California and a member of the SHJ Membership Committee created a resource list to aid you in programming.

For information about Sagan's life, click here .
You will find more quotable quotes here.

Listen to Sagan's last interview with Charlie Rose.
