Perhaps we should call this one Edyta's Letter!

Come and visit us for:

  • Brilliant new fabric colours and designs for Spring 2024
  • Ideas, advice and inspirations
  • Savings on February Special fabrics

This weekend our spotlight is on one of our favourite designers: Edyta Sitar creates not just quilts, but also the fabrics to make them.

We love her work so much we're major stockists of her fabrics, and also have superb quilt patterns from Edyta.

Edyta's Common Bride quilt is uncommonly amazing

This is Edyta's Common Bride Quilt, originally inspired by the 2011 'wedding fever' around the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Measuring an impressive 86in square, it's quite a project: as the pattern will tell you, it needs 7¼ yards of fabrics for the background and triangles, and 52 fat eighths(!) for the featured appliqué and 'foreground' designs. Give us a call on (01491) 572528 if you want advice on getting together the fabrics for the quilt.

Here's Edyta to explain the story of the quilt, and her background and inspirations, in a 2015 interview – and she's extremely entertaining!

Edyta has also just started a series of YouTube tutorials explaining the techniques behind the quilt in her inimitable style – here's the first part:

Mix and match Edyta's fabric collections to make quilts your way

One of the wonderful things about Edyta Sitar's collections is that they're designed with a quilter's eye, so it's easy to combine old and new fabrics to make her quilts. For example, the Common Bride quilt would look lovely in her English Garden collection...

Then again, you could add in some of the designs from her Green Thumb collection...

GADGET OF THE WEEK: Duckbill scissors for embroidery and appliqué

These Duckbill scissors are just the thing for fine embroidery and appliqué work: the double-curved handles let you get into tight corners, while the unique 'bill' shape of the lower section protects your precious fabric, making sure you only cut what you want to. Yes, they look odd, but try them and you'll wonder how you ever worked without them!

Here's how to use them...

A customer called us last week in need of help for the Common Bride Quilt she's working on: she'd been hunting for the right fabric to get her starting set together.

We suggested a pack from our range of Edyta Sitar precuts. 'OK,' she said, and ordered, but she didn't sound too convinced.

A couple of days later, she mailed us. 'I was a little nervous ordering online,' she wrote, 'but I'm definitely not disappointed... it's just perfect and beautiful!😍 I've just spent the past half hour stroking it... as you do 😘.

'Thanks SO much for your help with this project, really looking forward to starting it next week, if I dare wait that long😅. Can't wait to visit you and stock up on more.'

We were delighted, but that's what we do – so if you need help with your project, give us a call on (01491) 572528, send us a message via Facebook, or why not...
