Isthmus
Who knew there was a railroad across the Isthmus of Panama? Well, there was. It was built in 1855 and became the most expensive form of travel in the world by 1860. Join host Susan McCabe as she learns about life and chaos on that railroad with award-winning author Gar LaSalle who tells the stories of the capitalist barons, the sacrificed workers, the well-heeled travelers and the desperadoes who preyed on them all. LaSalle spent years researching the stories that didn't make the history books for this book, Isthmus, and for the entire five-book series on real life around the time of America's Civil War. Tune in on the VoV app or at voiceofvashon.org. It's sure to be real.

State of Franklin with Nancy Bristow and Doug Sackman
The State of Franklin was the possible 14th State located in what is now East Tennessee that never came to be. The struggle over the proposed State of Franklin helped define American policy that emerged in the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 that defined a process for new states to join the Union.
The struggle over the expansion of slavery dominated the admission of new states until the Civil War. We currently deal with tensions within states like the proposed State of Jefferson in Northern California, and the eastern counties in Oregon who have voted to join Idaho.
Vashon has been similarly wracked by attempts to either join Pierce County, to form our own Vashon County, or to incorporate as a city and this gain independence from King County.
