Dr Nancy Bristow
Join Brown Briefly hosts Craig Beles, Amy Drayer, Bruce Haulman, Kevin Jones, and Truman O/Brien as they welcome islander, University of Puget Sound Professor Emerita, and historian Dr. Nancy Bristow to the Briefly. Dr. Bristow will relate her books on the 1918 Influenza Pandemic, the 1970 Jackson State shootings, and World War I attempt to reform American values through the military training camps to the challenges we face today. The conversation will also touch on Dr. Bristow’s role in developing the Voice of Vashon Vashon250 radio show, her upcoming work with the Vashon COVID Project, and on her adjustment to retirement.

Thomas Paine’s “The American Crisis” Pamphlets - December 19, 1776
Join us to hear Brian Longs discuss Thomas Paine’s 16 essays that were a clarion call to bolster the struggle to fight the American Revolution. Paine’s words “These are the times that try men’s souls” and “The summer soldier and sunshine patriot” and “Tyranny, like hell is not easily conquered” continue to inspire American resistance movements. On Vashon, efforts to resist the expansion of the Glacier Mine on Maury Island, to expand the holdings of the Land Trust, and to demand adequate ferry service all reflect Paine’s efforts.

Future Vashon Performers
This July Jeff and John play tracks from acts that will be performing on Vashon in the near and distant future. Those acts include Grey Larsen and Cindy Kallet (Episcopal Church, July 24), Skerryvore (VCA, October 11), Julie Fowlis (VCA, February 3) and Lunasa (VCA, March 18). We also play new music from David Munnelly and Mick Connelly, Enda Scahill, Rianne Downey, Maria Dunn and Yann Falquet who performed recently at the Episcopal Church.
We play one of Kat’s songs, because she wasn’t there to stop me. Also included is a song composed in a cafe in Edinburgh sometime in the ’50’s and later made famous by Seattle’s own Jimi Hendrix. Thanks for supporting VoV

Boogie Back to Texas

Photographer Ave Bonar
Ave Bonar is a well-known photographer in Austin, partially because of her work in with Ann Richards and then as the photographer for the play Ann about Ann Richards that was on PBS. Boogie Back host Geoff Fletcher’s spouse, Terri, did some research and found that Ave also photographed musicians. A show was born.
Tune in to hear songs from musicians photographed by Ave, such as Erik Hokkanen with a little swing and fine guitar work from Junior Brown and from steel player extraordinaire Cindy Cashdollar. The beautiful voices of the duo Christine Albert and Jimmie LaFave and Kat Edmondson beautify the show. We got your jazz with Ron Westray and Elias Haslanager and some blues from Kathy and the Kilowatts and James Cotton. Ruthie Foster and Bill Kirchen bring some thoughtful numbers and The Peterson Brothers offer some bouncy blues. It’s a good one.
