Vashon250

Tuesday, 1-1:30

Moravian Massacre with Doug Sackman & Nancy Bristow

The massacre occurred on March 8, 1782 at the Moravian missionary village of Gnadenhutten, Ohio. The victims were primarily Lenape (Delaware) and Mohican Indians who had converted to Christianity under Moravian missionaries and practiced pacifism, refusing to take sides in the war.

The Gnadenhutten massacre remains one of the most infamous atrocities of the American Revolutionary War and set the pattern for a long, long list of massacres. The numbers alone can't get anywhere near the significance and meaning and devastation of these massacres that took place across the continent.

On Vashon, the Removal of sx̌ʷəbabš or Swift Water People in 1854, the removal of Indigenous Children from Vashon Schools to Indian Boarding Schools, and the Exile and imprisonment of Vashon’s Japanese Americans during WW II echo these events.

Homages, VCA Appearances and More

We pay homage to Paddy Keenan this month. Paddy’s passing marks the end of an era. Very few people in Traditional music are so widely and deeply admired or as influential as Paddy. We also lost the wonderful singer from the Isle of Lewis, Mary Smith. We pay homage to her as well. We play tracks from people who will performing at the VCA soon: Skerryvore, Julie Fowlis, and Lunasa. We also play the Weeds, who performed recently at the Episcopal church, Rose Bett, Beoga (who backed out of the Ed Sheeran tour in support of Macklemore), Tommy O’Sullivan and our own Hayden Stern.

PAST EPISODES

Boogie Back to Texas

Wednesday, 6-7 PM

Blue

Not the blues, but the color blue. There is a bunch of shows about the color blue, but as ex-English teacher and Boogie Back host Geoff Fletcher used to say, “Is it really the color?” Of course not; it is a symbol, a metaphor, usually for sadness.

Tune in for proof from Jimmie Dale Glmore, Radney Foster, Shawn Colvin and George Strait. But blue is the color of a Bluebird as we hear from The Flatlanders and Buffalo Springfield. Rodney Crowell and Emmylou sing of Bluebird Wine, and Willie lightens things up with some Blue Skies.

We are never done with the sadness though, as Delbert McClinton, Slaid Cleaves and Jerry Jeff can attest. Suite Judy Blue Eyes marked the end of a relationship and marks the end of the show.

Cosmic Cowboys & Cowgirls Special Edition: Panning for Platinum

The cosmic prospectors ride again! This week Atmospheric Rivers descends into the forgotten canyons of country rock for a special edition of our Cosmic Cowboys & Cowgirls series — not the stuff that made the charts, but the stuff that deserved to. We’re sifting through decades of dusty grooves for the rare, the underplayed, and the gloriously overlooked: pedal steel dreamers, high-desert mystics, and honky-tonk visionaries who slipped through history’s fingers like so much river sand. Their loss was the cut-out bin’s gain. This Saturday, it’s yours!
