Spotlight On John Midgley
John Midgley’s great voice and jazz knowledge got him a spot on KBCS, a station connected with Bellevue College, doing a weekly slot called Drivetime Jazz back in 2003-2009. Moving to Vashon, John got involved with Rick Wallace and others in obtaining a low power FM frequency that is now KVSH 101.9, and started doing a live jazz show called Jazz Kaleidoscope.
John renamed it Beyond Category in 2018, where he now shares music with listeners that lets them hear things they might not know, or things they do know in a different context. You can catch his 300th show this Thursdays at 3pm or On Demand by going to his show page, Beyond Category.

Minneapolis-born, world-bred singer/songwriter Hannah von der Hoff is an original soul, folk rock performing & recording artist 'Holy Hannah!’ Her vignetted musical style speaks to the inception of rock & roll: an amalgam of blues, soul, folk, rock and roots which remind us that authentic, organic songs are still alive and well. She’s currently on her ‘Ramblin’ Woman’ tour playing shows in the Pacific Northwest, making a two week stop on Vashon Island. Constitutional scholar Craig Beles joins Vashon250 to discuss the emergence of the Vermont Republic and its constitution that prohibited slavery. The inherent contradictions of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution to address the issue of slavery during a struggle for independence and freedom is central to understanding America. Similar contradictions on Vashon about ethnic, social, and racial diversity have helped to define the emerging island community.

Future Vashon Performers
This July Jeff and John play tracks from acts that will be performing on Vashon in the near and distant future. Those acts include Grey Larsen and Cindy Kallet (Episcopal Church, July 24), Skerryvore (VCA, October 11), Julie Fowlis (VCA, February 3) and Lunasa (VCA, March 18). We also play new music from David Munnelly and Mick Connelly, Enda Scahill, Rianne Downey, Maria Dunn and Yann Falquet who performed recently at the Episcopal Church.
We play one of Kat’s songs, because she wasn’t there to stop me. Also included is a song composed in a cafe in Edinburgh sometime in the ’50’s and later made famous by Seattle’s own Jimi Hendrix. Thanks for supporting VoV

Amanda Knox Does a Cartwheel
Named after a gymnastics exercise that was weaponized against her by both Italian authorities and a hostile media, Amanda Knox is ready to cartwheel onto a UK stage with a one-woman comedy show. After two sold-out shows this past weekend on Vashon, Amanda’s funny and thought-provoking take on motherhood is just a couple weeks away from debuting at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Prior to the Vashon shows, Amanda and her husband/collaborator Christopher Robinson sat down with Jeff & Cindy Hoyt to talk about how she’s finding age-appropriate ways to tell the “Mama Goes to Italy” story to her 5-year-old daughter. And what will it be like to perform the show in the country where many of the most salacious tabloid fabrications about Amanda were born?

Boogie Back to Texas

Last week Boogie Back host Geoff Fletcher reprised (can you make that noun a verb?) a show featuring musical artists that Austin photographer Ave Bonar photographed. She spread the word about that show and Dave Pedley, another Austin photographer, offered some of his own, primarily artists supported by Black Fret, a non-profit in Austin. Tune in to hear birthday boys Radney Foster and Don Henley and quite a few artists not heard before on Boogie Back including Avi Kaplan and Beat Root Revival. Jonathan Terrell and Marc Benno sing of love, and Sidney Wright and Cilantro Boombox bring a Latin feel. Western Youth and The Watters offer some introspective thoughts, and Cari Huston REALLY sounds like Janis Joplin. It is a great mix.
