Vashon250

Tuesday, 1-1:30

Book of Negroes with Nancy Bristow

“The Book of Negroes” refers to a historical ledger, 150 pages in length, containing the names of 3000 Black Africans and African Americans who attained their freedom through service to the British war effort. Having your name in the book constituted a promise that you and your children would be evacuated to Nova Scotia to begin free lives. A little-known historical artifact, it reflects the much larger story of Black Americans,

The struggle over slavery, the Civil War and subsequent Reconstruction and of emergence of Jim Crow set the precedent for the 20th Century. The Great Migration, the 1953 Bown Decision, and the reaction all shaped the racial politics of the 21st Century.

Vashon was also swept by these larger national forces.

Embracing The Muse

Tuesday, 6-7 PM

Jen Ayers and SHe Said

Jen Ayers is bringing her groundbreaking musical SHe Said to Vashon Center for the Arts on October 23. Sally and Jen talk about the process of creating a musical inspired by Jen’s experience when her husband came out as transgender—and about the love that has sustained their relationship through profound change.

SHe Said won rave reviews when it debuted at Seattle’s Intiman Theatre, along with praise from the transgender community. Think of it as a glam-rock ode to true love—funny, vulnerable, powerful, and touching.

Rolling Wave

Wednesday, Noon - 2 PM

Sunday, 10 AM - Noon

Homages, VCA Appearances and More

We pay homage to Paddy Keenan this month. Paddy’s passing marks the end of an era. Very few people in Traditional music are so widely and deeply admired or as influential as Paddy. We also lost the wonderful singer from the Isle of Lewis, Mary Smith. We pay homage to her as well. We play tracks from people who will performing at the VCA soon: Skerryvore, Julie Fowlis, and Lunasa. We also play the Weeds, who performed recently at the Episcopal church, Rose Bett, Beoga (who backed out of the Ed Sheeran tour in support of Macklemore), Tommy O’Sullivan and our own Hayden Stern.

Tune in – It's sure to be REAL.

Boogie Back to Texas

Wednesday, 6-7 PM

Home

Newly returned from three weeks in his original home town of Cincinnati, Boogie Back host Geoff Fletcher decided to reprise a show about home. Tune in to hear various takes on this concept from Texas musicians. Merle and Willie each have a religious view on home. George Jones and Tammy Wynette and CSNY have different takes on the relationship to a home. Lyle Lovett and Eliza Gilkyson elicit powerful feelings about an old porch (Lyle) and the Light of Santa Fe (Eliza). Charlie Robison and Gary P. Nunn yearn for the hometowns of their past, but Shawn Colvin and James McMurtry have the opposite feelings. We have a guitar extravaganza on the way out the door with Stephen Stills and Eric Clapton going back home and Jimmy Vaughan and Buddy Guy a long way from home. Get your nostalgia hats on.
