SPOTLIGHT ON

Mark Bennion

Today, we honor artist Mark Bennion, who passed away earlier this year. He contributed his amazing welding and fabrication skills to VoV's Emergency Alert Service. Mark built the antenna mount for our 1650AM signal atop the Heights water tank north of town. He also fabricated all four of the emergency alert flashing light signs.

Mark was a well-known sculptor and painter who showed his work across the United States, Canada, and Europe since 1968. Mark created the huge mobile sculpture on the corner at VCA and served on the VCA board.

NW Community Bail Fund

"People are not free because they can't afford to be free." This is the bottom line for individuals who've been arrested and jailed, but can't pay for bail to get out before their trial. Cyril Walrond, Executive Director for the NW Community BailFund will outline all the ways bail requirements contribute to injustice in our criminal legal system. He and Associate Director of Funds Recovery Heidi Whalley join host Susan McCabe to illustrate the impacts of bail requirements on people arrested but not convicted who, regardless of guilt, languish in jail at the cost of their jobs, housing and even their families. It's a downward spiral that preys on low-income people, but the negative effects can be reduced. Tune in to this enlightening conversation.

Some Funky Tunes from 2021

Hey, Funksters, we’re going to take a brief break from the 70’s funky tunes and check out how funk tunes have evolved in our more current times, in this case about 50 years later, 2021. You’ll be treated to some funky tunes by some of my favorites: bands like Dumpstaphunk, Cory Wong, Mark Lettieri and Tower of Power, along with some tunes from Cha Wa, Trazae Clinton, WRD, the James Taylor Quartet (sorry, not that James Taylor!) and The Grease Traps, as well as hearing funky tunes from Bruno Mars and The Allergies. And since we won’t have any James Brown tunes to hear…well, I thought I’d add a tune from someone who is also really funky…Prince. It’s going to be an earful of great funk tunes so, please…check it out… it airs right after the Whiskey Jim Radio Hour…or any time if you go to the TGIF Show page! Yes, we are trying to keep things funky!!
