The Summer of Renaissance

Jeff Hoyt is back with his first batch of new Hoytus Interruptus episodes since before the pandemic. These short, personal true stories from his life range from funny to poignant to thought-provoking.

First up: If there’s one thing about young love, it’s really hard to go your separate ways when you’re only just getting started. So, when Jeff & Cindy started dating over fifty years ago, their first summer spent apart was a tough one for Jeff. But then, along came music to save the day! A progressive, symphonic rock band from England gave Jeff something to hold onto during the longest summer of his life. Listen to this episode with headphones!

NEW SHOW!

Welcome to Vashon250, a local celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

Join Jon Flora and Bruce Haulman each week in 2026 for interesting stories about our collective American and Vashon Island heritage.

Our intent is to provide stories that link us all back to the Revolutionary beginning of our country by exploring how the issues and events of that era are part of the history we are making today.

We’ll also explore how Vashon has experienced it all in its own distinct and local way

Rolling Wave

Wednesday, noon-2 PM

Solidarity

In February Kat and John select an hour music in solidarity with our Spanish and Hispanic brothers and sisters. There are Celts in Spain, where a lot of “unofficial” trade with the British Isles goes back centuries. Some scholars speculate that the famous pipes of the British Isles developed out of the Spanish gaita. We start the show with a song from Seth Staton Watkins, “If the People Unite.” In between we play some very traditional tunes from Johnny O’Leary, Sean Gavin and Colm Gannon, the Harbour Folk Band, Natalie MacMaster, and Anna Murray. More “hip” takes on the music come from Peat and Diesel, Pauline Scanlon, and The Proclaimers. For fun we include Irish comedian, Garron Noon’s directions for making a proper cuppa Barry’s tea. And from Celtic Spain we play Fernando Barroso’s muinieiras (jigs) and Boj Folk’s Xota Dos Duas Ports. We finish the show with another song sung by Watkins about the Irish Americans who fought for Mexico in the Mexican American War of 1848.

Boogie Back to Texas

Wednesday, 6-7 PM

Top of Top 100

Creating two new Fletchie shows in January caused Boogie Back host Geoff Fletcher to look at past “Best of” shows. He landed on Show 100 where, in a convoluted process, he picked 11 of his favorite songs from the first 98 shows he played. Tune in to hear amazing voices (Roy Orbison, k.d. lang, Monte Warden), terrific songwriting/storytelling (Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett. Slaid Cleaves, Darden Smith) and kick-ass rock (Lonnie Mack, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Plant’s Band of Joy and the Fabulous T-birds). One of the best of the best.

Funk Tunes from 2021

So, what funky tunes were being released in 2021? Tune in and be treated to some funky tunes by some of my favorite bands like Dumpstaphunk, Cory Wong, Mark Lettieri and Tower of Power, along with some tunes from Cha Wa, Trazae Clinton, WRD, the James Taylor Quartet (sorry, not that James Taylor!) and The Grease Traps, as well as hearing funky tunes from Bruno Mars and The Allergies. And since we won’t have any James Brown tunes to hear…well, I thought I’d add a tune from someone who is also really funky…Prince. It’s going to be an earful of great funk tunes so, please…check it out… it airs right after the Whiskey Jim Radio Hour…or any time if you go to the TGIF Show page!

Yes, we are trying to keep things funky!!

Sunday Silence

Sunday, 11 – midnight

Eyes in Place of an Eye

This week we are keeping with the alchemy of love—with eros as a corpus hermeticum. Sound here serving as the furnace for the merge: suggesting that the creative impulse and romantic passion are not two isolated flames, but a single coalescent fire, searing and silent. With tracks from Laurén Maria, COLA REN, and Fatalism, we will see two gazes that summon each other, beauty incarnating into sight, the sublime vision of sensual wholeness. This episode, in other words, attempts to follow the apocryphal Gospel of Thomas to the word: making the two into one, folding the outside into the inside, forging two eyes in place of one.
