50 MEMBER STORIES FOR 50 YEARS FEATURING MELANIE WEBER
In celebration of our 50th Anniversary, SHPE Out Loud is highlighting the “origin story” of an influential member or SHPE ally every week for 50 weeks. In this episode, we talk with Board Vice-Chair Melanie Weber. Melanie spent the last year as a Flight Operations Engineer at Blue Origin, and before that, she was at Boeing for nearly 15 years. Melanie’s story involves overcoming imposter syndrome, many “pinch me” moments, and lots of giving back.

SHPE MEMBER RECEIVES INTERN OF THE YEAR AWARD
Edwin Lopez-Roman was recently named “Intern of the Year" at the University of Arkansas. Lopez-Roman is a senior mechanical engineering student who was a summer 2023 intern with Brown Engineers. This esteemed recognition is awarded to an outstanding student who has demonstrated achievement and excellence within their internship experience and academic journey. Edwin is currently the VP of External Affairs for his SHPE Chapter.

PREVIOUS SURVEY'S RESULTS!
Thank you to all who participated in our latest survey focusing on the reasons for perceived stagnation in mobile phone innovation. With 1,447 responses, the results were split pretty evenly. 383 (26.5%) believe that most people have phones, so companies focus on incremental updates, while 368 (25.4%) said the most transformative technologies have already been developed. 363 of you (25.1%) think phones meet the needs of most consumers, reducing the demand for innovation. And 333 (23%) say the cost of developing truly innovative features is prohibitive. 📱🔋⌚
