PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
INDUSTRY PHDS: WHAT ARE THEY & HOW DO YOU ATTAIN ONE?

Would you like to work in industry and have your company pay for your PhD? In this session, panelists will discuss how they were able to work with a company while pursuing a PhD. How do they financially and mentally manage? Which companies are more likely to pay for a PhD? Join Region 4 on Wednesday, October 20 at 5pm ET to learn more.

Come hear from past Graduate Committee members, Dr. Lucas Caretta, Dr. Mauro Rodriguez, and Dr. Peter Rios on their experience after SHPE and their current roles. This event takes place on October 20 from 7:30-8:30pm ET.

#SHPEREADS: GRADS EDITION

Join us for our first meeting of #SHPEreads: GRADS (GRaduate & Advanced Degree Students) Edition on Wednesday, October 27, at 7pm ET. We will be reading the paper Survival Skills for Graduate School and Beyond by Beth A. Fischer and Michael J. Zigmond. Download the paper, read it, and come ready to have a great discussion lead by the authors themselves! GRADS that register, attend, and participate will receive a $30 Postmates gift card.

OCTOBER HORCHATA Y CHARLA

You’re invited to join Region 1 graduate students in October’s Horchata y Charla, a casual hangout where members can talk about whatever comes to mind. In the spirit of Spooktober, bring your favorite Halloween memories and scary stories to the table. Fix your favorite fall beverage and join us on October 21 from 6 – 7pm PT.

OCTOBER GRADUATE SOCIAL

Come meet the new Region 6 Graduate Committee and graduate members across the region! There will be a chance to network and play a game where winners can earn prizes! (Tip: Bring out your best memes for this one.) Please sign up via the Zoom link to register for the event and save it in your calendar!

3-MINUTE THESIS COMPETITION DEADLINE EXTENDED

This year at SHPE National Convention, the Graduate Track will hold a 3-Minute Thesis Competition at the Graduate Hospitality Suite! Eligible applicants should sign up by October 22. Each application will be reviewed by peers and sponsors, and the top three presentations will present in person at the 2021 SHPE National Convention in Orlando, to win cash prizes.

GRADUATE TRACK AT THE SHPE NATIONAL CONVENTION

In the Graduate Track at the SHPE National Convention, graduate student participants learn to develop relationships with academic and industry professionals, identify and plan for post-graduate career opportunities through workshops and access to the Advanced Degree Hospitality Suite, as well as showcase their research with our 3-Minute Thesis Competition!

GEM FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION

Have you considered applying to be a GEM Fellow? This premiere organization supports qualified students from underrepresented communities to pursue graduate degrees in applied science and engineering. GEM is funded by leading corporations, government laboratories, top universities, and top research institutions. Learn more at a GEM Grad Lab or apply to become a GEM Fellow. Applications are due November 15.

THANK YOU TO THE BURROUGHS WELLCOME FUND

Thank you to the Burroughs Wellcome Fund for funding registration and travel awards for graduate students to join the 2021 SHPE National Convention. Ten students selected randomly won registration awards and four NGC leaders were awarded registration and travel chosen by SHPE staff based on their contributions to the NGC. Congratulations to our winners! We will see you soon.
