WORDS MATTER: ON THE DEBATE OVER FREE SPEECH


Join us October 11 at 7pm ET for our October edition of #SHPEReads: GRADS Edition. Presenter Dr. Stephen Santa-Ramirez will discuss his work Sink or Swim: The Mentoring Experiences of Latinx PhD Students with Faculty of Color. Dr. Santa-Ramirez is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education at the University at Buffalo. All SHPE members that register, attend, and participate in the meeting will receive a $30 DOORDASH gift card!

DEADLINE EXTENDED: GRADUATE THESIS COMPETITION


Exponent is sponsoring this year’s Graduate Thesis Competition! Current Master’s or PhD graduate students and post-docs will showcase their research in 3 minutes with one slide to a broad audience. Three finalists per category will be invited to present in-person at the 2022 SHPE National Convention. Best presentation and runner-up will be awarded a cash prize of $1000 and $750 respectively. Submission deadline is EXTENDED to October 9 at 11:59pm ET.

GRADUATE WELCOME SOCIAL AT CONVENTION


The National Convention Graduate Track Committee invites you to the Graduate Welcome Social! Meet graduate students, grad degree holders, and members interested in graduate school from across the country. Refreshments will be provided and gift cards for the SHPE Mercado will be raffled off to those in attendance. Join us on November 2 at 7:30pm in Room E 220E!

REGION 4 MONTHLY GRAD SOCIALS


Join us for the start of a monthly series of socials for graduate students, hosted by Region 4 over Zoom. We’ll be hanging out October 21 at 6pm ET. Students of all backgrounds are welcome to connect! Those who RSVP and complete post-event surveys for RGLC4 socials and events will be put in a raffle pool for $20 DoorDash cards. Join us for a panel of GEM Fellows as we approach the SHPE National Convention! With the GEM Annual Conference still fresh in our minds, we are here to talk about the opportunities available as a GEM Fellow. GEM is a network of leading institutions that enables qualified students from underrepresented communities to pursue graduate education in applied science and engineering. HOW TO BUY A HOME AS A GRAD STUDENT


This event is geared toward graduate students interested in buying a home. The speaker is Sam Hogan, a mortgage loan officer with Movement Mortgage. Having helped over 60 Ph.D. students across the country buy their first homes, he is passionate about making graduate students homeowners. PODCAST: IS GRADUATE SCHOOL FOR ME?


For those who have asked themselves the question "Is Grad School For Me?", here is a podcast to assist you in that important decision. SHPE Region 7's very own RGR and RVP are asked about the experiences they've had while pursuing a graduate education. This is given from both a PhD (research) and MBA point of view. Learn about what it is like going to graduate school, how it is gaining a MBA while working, and how different being a research assistant is from being a regular student.
