Message From the President
Thank you to all who joined us yesterday for the Annual Legal Update. We tried a new format this year and from we've heard, our members really enjoyed it! Keep sharing feedback to help us make your membership more meaningful. And special thanks to those members who purchased a shirt or mug to support the SHRM Foundation AND allowed me to get a pie thrown in my face. We also shared a huge announcement in case you missed it. Johnny c. Taylor, President & CEO of SHRM will be keynoting at our Annual Conference in October. If you haven't saved the date yet, now is the time to do that - it's happening on Friday, October 18th, at Ameristar Casino.
Lastly, I wanted to formally announce the theme of our great chapter for this year - tHRive - Transforming Human Resources into Valued Experts. The role of HR is changing and we are committed to serving you through meaningful programs and experiences to not only elevate the HR profession in our community, but also to help you grow personally and professionally.

I look forward to growing with you this year!

This initiative champions the hiring of individuals with criminal records, an untapped talent pool that has traditionally been shut out of the labor market. This initiative calls on business executives and association leaders to pledge to consider qualified individuals for job opportunities regardless of their criminal records, giving those that deserve it - a second chance. Click here for more information and to take the pledge.

Black History Month: Impacting Our Daily Life
Contributed by Hannah Hayes, Inclusion & Diversity Committee

We take a closer look at Black Community History during February. Consider the workplace subtleties of daily life in a minority's shoes. Zenia Johnson shares what your Black co-worker may be thinking: "I am only human. Just like everyone else, I have frustrations and feel anger, but I also know that the stereotype of the Angry Black Woman is pervasive in our society." Click here to read more. We also encounter employees who are part of multiple minorities such as Black Deaf Culture. This rich community brings diversity to the workplace. ( National Black Deaf Advocates) Even as service providers, Black Sign Language Interpreters for the Deaf have to be aware of their clothing color so their clients can clearly see them. Click here to read more. Finally, include your Black job applicants in similar ways on the Black Career Network to truly appreciate the worth this community can bring.
