Message From the President
I write to you this month with as much anticipation as ever with our Annual Conference fast approaching on October 18th. We are sold out of our booths for the Business Partner Expo and almost out of spots for members to register as we inch toward a sell out well in advance. If you are planning to attend, please register to hold your spot. If you have previously registered but your plans changed, please let us know so we can offer the spot to another member. Special thanks to Andrew Metcalf, Robin Wood, and the rest of the Conference Committee for an excellent job! We hope to see as many of you as possible in a few short weeks as host Johnny C. Taylor and our other excellent line-up of speakers and sponsors. Click here to read more.
September 24th Webinar - "Exempt or Non-Exempt: That is the Question"
How you ever heard these statements?
  • We pay everyone salaried, so we don't have to pay overtime.
  • Our receptionist is our administrative role, so it is an exempt position.

The Fair Labor Standards Act is often misunderstood or misinterpreted, and the penalties can be significant. It is important that companies understand the exemption rules and appropriately classify their employees under the law. Click here for more information and to register.

The Benefits of Hiring Employees with a Disability
Contributed by MT & Associates | Sign Language Interpreting, Inclusion & Diversity Committee

October is National Disability Awareness Month. SHRM loves to support organizations such as Starkloff Disability Institute. They came to educate SHRM of Greater St. Louis at the January 2019 dinner meeting. They mutually provide us ongoing recommendations for best practices in hiring and working with someone with a disability. This is a vast and diverse category and can be an intimidating subject to broach. What are appropriate accommodations to provide and which ones cross the line? Why should you open up the candidate pool to those with a disability? Consider recommendations for why hiring an employee with a disability may be beneficial for your organization.
