NYMC Annual Days of Giving Set for March 26 and 27

We aim to deliver quality healthcare education, starting by assisting our students in managing tuition costs, thereby reducing their financial strain upon graduation. NYMC will host our annual “Days of Giving” fundraising campaign to raise funds for student scholarships in the SOM, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and School of Health Sciences and Practice. You can contribute by making your donation in advance or by participating on March 26 and 27.

CDM Provides Hands-On Training for First Responders

Center for Disaster Medicine tra

The Center for Disaster Medicine conducted three days of training for first responders from throughout the Hudson Valley, Upstate New York, and Connecticut. During the training, the Center taught a Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) course, where first responders learned how to treat trauma victims under austere conditions and a Rescue Task Force (RTF) course, which taught how law enforcement officers and pre-hospital care providers can operate as a team. Utilizing the concepts and principles of TECC and RTF, the first responders learned basic bleeding control, airway management, and victim evacuation techniques.

D.P.T. Class of 2025 Present Community Service Projects

Students from the NYMC D.P.T. Class of 2025 presented their community service projects. They shared information and lessons learned through their projects in health and wellness, the Race for Rehab and global outreach.

NYMC NSSLHA Chapter Hosts Fundraiser for Smile Train

The NYMC National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) chapter partnered with Smile Train and raised nearly $400 for children affected by cleft palate and/or cleft lip. Smile Train is the world’s largest cleft-focused organization, providing free cleft care for more than 1.5 million children. The organization supports local medical professionals including SLPs and nutritionists. The event was organized by NYMC NSSLHA community service coordinator Anushka Parakh, B.D.S., left, SLP Class of 2024, who partnered with Captain Lawrence Brewery to host the event.

Students Shine at 2023 Multidisciplinary Community Outreach 

Faculty and students attended the Annual Neighborhood Health Fair at Calvary Baptist Church hosted by White Plains Hospital.

NYMC Hosts “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web”

NYMC and TU faculty experts shared their thoughts on popular topics in medicine at the webinar, “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web,” on November 2. Hosted by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer of NYMC with a question-and-answer session moderated by Alan Kadish, M.D., president of NYMC and TU, the webinar covered remedies for temporomandibular disorders; therapy for ingrown toenails; current state-of-therapy for recurrent urinary tract infections in women; treatments for "weekend warriors" with an Achilles tendon rupture; and a panel discussion on the importance of annual physical examinations.

Dr. P.H. Candidate Advocates for Long Term Care Through the Media

In March 2006, profiled a NYMC GSBMS student with dreams of becoming a medical journalist. Almost 20 years later, Imran Ali, M.D., M.S. ’06, M.P.H ’16, has accomplished that goal, including positions at CNN and ABC News, along with many others, carving out an impressive career in medicine and public health. Now, back at NYMC as a Dr.P.H. candidate in the SHSP, he is looking to enhance his research capabilities and continue to use his platform to educate the masses on a topic dear to his heart: long-term care. SLP Alumna Opens Local Private Practice in Honor of Late Sister

Amanda De Alem, M.S. ’13, CCC-SLP, TSSLE-BE, is a local trilingual SLP who recently launched her own private practice in Larchmont, New York. Speech-Language Lilies opened its doors in January 2024, offering services in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. The private practice is a culmination of a lifelong dream and a desire to fill a need in the community, as well as a tribute to De Alem’s late sister, Lillian, who passed at the age of 22 after a lifelong battle with brain cancer. D.P.T. Alumnus Finds Solace in Writing After Cardiac Event

When Tyler Van Benschoten, D.P.T. ’19, woke up on October 16, 2022, everything felt normal until about 11:30 a.m. when he noticed his heart started to race. Utilizing his professional experience and NYMC D.P.T. education, he assessed himself and found his heartbeat was irregular. He suspected atrial fibrillation. He was correct. After the cardiac event, Dr. Van Benschoten turned to writing to reduce stress and inspire others. More than 40,000 words later, a book was born. “Grateful for the Opportunity: A Journey through Self Growth” was released in June 2023, opening a new channel of communication for Dr. Van Benschoten with anyone looking to grow mentally, physically, or spiritually.
