Mark J. Kittleson, Ph.D., has joined the faculty of NYMC's School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) as professor and chair of the newly realigned Department of Public Health. The School of Health Sciences and Practice created the new Department of Public Health to integrate the public health areas of concentration, among them behavioral health sciences, biostatistics, emergency preparedness, environmental health science, epidemiology, global health, health care administration, health education, health policy and management, and industrial hygiene. The department also has become, for purposes of accreditation, NYMC's entire public health "program" that currently has full accreditation through 2022. Dr. Kittleson was selected for the position following a national search that included many qualified candidates. He most recently served as dean of the School of Health and Human Performance at SUNY Brockport, a school with some of the largest majors at the college including nursing, kinesiology, sport studies, and physical education (KSSPE), public health and health education, healthcare studies and recreation and leisure studies. Community service projects carried out by Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) students in the School of Health Sciences are a win-win. Students learn important lessons in planning, executing and assessing an activity that addresses a local or underserved community need and a host of beneficiaries gain from their hard work, skills and knowledge. This year the D.P.T. Class of 2019 shared their community service projects and outcomes with the College community on November 30 in Nevins Auditorium. They also gave first-hand and sage advice to members of the D.P.T. Class of 2020 who will build upon the success of the projects and expand their scope. Innovations to this year's projects included creating a video of the Race for Rehab course that was available for participants to view prior to the race and developing a breathing and relaxation technique brochure and assembling toiletry care packages for My Sister's Place, an organization that provides shelter and services to battered women and their children and victims of human trafficking. More than 60 students and alumni in the School of Health Sciences and Practice put their best foot forward and met with advisers at the 8th Annual Career Mentor Session hosted by the Student Healthcare Executives Club (StuHE) on November 16 under the guidance of advisors Denise C. Tahara, M.B.A., M.Phil, Ph.D., associate professor of public health practice and director, M.P.H. Studies, and Michael P. Shakarjian, Ph.D., assistant professor and program director, M.P.H. Environmental Health Science Studies. The Medical Education Center lobby was filled with stations for participants to meet and network with public health professionals serving as career mentors, offering feedback on their resumes and tips for searching for a job. Seventeen career mentors included alumni and professionals representing behavioral/community health, global health, environmental health, hospital systems, emergency preparedness, pharmaceuticals, county health commissioners and federally qualified health centers. Remote access mentor sessions were available for distance learning students as well as off-site mentors. Ben C. Watson, Ph.D., vice dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice, offered his guidance on careers in public health. "The event was, once again, a great success. It was a great opportunity for presenting a diverse range of health care opportunities in the field of public health," said StuHE president Namrata FNU. Faculty, students and alumni of the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) were among the 12,000 public health practitioners learning, sharing and exploring public health discipline and practice issues at APHA 2017, the American Public Health Association annual meeting and expo, held November 4-8 in Atlanta. This year's theme, "Creating the Healthiest Nation: Climate Changes Health," featured sessions focused on climate change, from its impact on disease-carrying vectors to the role of transportation and planning professionals to occupational safety in the green job sector. Musarrat Rahman, an M.P.H. candidate in behavioral sciences and health promotion, was nominated by the Delta Alpha Chapter of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health and selected through a national student competition, to present her scholarship and research at their annual sponsored student poster session through the Academic Public Health Caucus. She presented "Watching Your Back: How Much Do People at Increased Risk Actually Know about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Its Association with Anal Cancer?" Parthener Pinder, M.D., an M.P.H. candidate in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, recently participated in the 32nd Council of International Fellowship (CIF) International Conference 2017 held in September in Kalamata, Greece. The CIF is a not-for-profit global organization formed in 1960 stemming from the Council of International Programs (CIP) and the Council of International Programs U.S.A. (CIPUSA). With more than 30 national branches worldwide, CIF's goal is to "promote international understanding and world peace through training and exchange of experience for professionals in human services." '10, M.P.H., director of the Center for Disaster Medicine, associate professor of environmental health science, and associate professor of clinical emergency medicine and director, Center of Excellence in Precision Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters, shared their experiences of their recent medical mission trip to Puerto Rico, bringing desperately needed supplies and medical aid to the island after the devastation of Hurricane Maria. The School of Health Sciences and Practice hosted a special Dean's Lecture on October 3, welcoming Michael J. Dowling, second from right, president and chief executive officer of Northwell Health, as the evening's keynote speaker. Mr. Dowling shared his perspectives on the changing landscape of health care. He was joined by, from left: Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president of government affairs; Alan Kadish, M.D., president; Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer; and Daniel Blum, president and chief executive officer of Phelps Memorial Hospital Center.
